Engineered Wood Flooring Surface Finishes Explained
What gives engineered wood flooring its unique surface texture?
It starts with the natural grain of the wood. In the factory, sanding creates a smooth, even surface. Then, different surface techniques can add a distinct look and feel.
Brushing brings out the wood grain and adds a tactile texture. Hammer marks create an irregular, textured appearance. A distressed finish gives the floor a more aged character, while saw marks leave visible lines inspired by traditional milling.
Hand-scraping creates subtle variations across the board, giving it an artisan feel. Embossing adds a more pronounced texture and can bring out the natural grain pattern.
Each finish looks and feels different. The final result also depends on the wood species, color and coating. That’s why we recommend checking samples under good lighting and feeling the surface before making your choice.
