The Pattern That Transforms a Floor — AM-21
AM-21 is a 90×600mm herringbone-format engineered American walnut floor in AB grade with a smooth surface and UV lacquer finish — combining the depth and warmth of American walnut, the most coveted dark hardwood in contemporary flooring, with herringbone, the most architecturally powerful parquet pattern available: a pattern that transforms the perception of a room's scale, directionality, and material quality with greater visual impact than any plank configuration of the same species.

American walnut occupies a unique position among hardwood flooring species. Its colour range — deep chocolate-brown to warm mid-brown with subtle purple undertones — is produced by the natural heartwood pigmentation of Juglans nigra and cannot be replicated by staining or smoking lighter species. The grain is predominantly straight, with a fine, even texture and a natural lustre that UV lacquer amplifies rather than conceals. At AB grade, boards have predominantly clear straight grain with occasional small tight knots and natural mineral marks — enough natural character to read as a premium material, consistent enough to maintain the visual coherence that herringbone pattern demands.

The herringbone pattern is the reason AM-21 uses 90×600mm stave dimensions. The 1:6.67 length-to-width ratio is the classic herringbone proportion — wide enough for the grain and colour of each stave to register individually, long enough for the V-pattern direction to read clearly across the floor. Each stave contributes its own grain direction to the pattern, and the alternating angles of adjacent staves mean that the natural lustre of the walnut UV lacquer surface changes across the floor as the viewing angle changes — different staves catching light differently, creating a surface with depth and visual movement that a plank floor, however wide, cannot produce.
Design Guide
AM-21's rich chocolate-brown American walnut in classic herringbone format is one of the most versatile and impactful luxury flooring combinations available. Two contexts where its specific qualities are most valued:
Contemporary Luxury-am-21
Contemporary Luxury
AM-21's deep walnut colour and herringbone geometry are the natural partner of the contemporary luxury interior: dark paint, brass and bronze hardware, polished stone, heavy wool and linen textiles. The chocolate-brown of American walnut reads as an anchor — a warm, rich ground that makes gold and brass tones more vivid and dark walls more enveloping. The herringbone pattern adds a formal complexity that distinguishes a luxury space from a merely well-appointed one.
Classic Period-am-21
Classic Period
Herringbone parquet in dark hardwood is historically associated with the grandest rooms of 18th and 19th century European architecture — the ballrooms, drawing rooms, and entrance halls of houses that understood the floor as the primary architectural surface. AM-21 in American walnut re-instates this quality: the pattern is historically correct, the species is appropriately dark and richly grained, and the UV lacquer provides a surface that is practical for modern use.
Installation & Room Suitability
T&G Glue-Down Installation (Herringbone)
AM-21 uses traditional tongue and groove edges and requires full-spread adhesive glue-down installation — the correct and recommended method for herringbone parquet pattern.

•Full-spread adhesive to subfloor (flexible wood floor adhesive)
•Subfloor flatness: 3mm per 2m maximum — herringbone is less   forgiving of high spots than plank
•Moisture barrier / DPM required on concrete subfloors
•Mark the herringbone centre line before starting — plan layout from the      room centre
•Stave joints must be tight — do not force misaligned staves
•Allow adhesive to cure fully before foot traffic (typically 24 hours)
Professional installation strongly recommended for herringbone pattern
Underfloor Heating
AM-21 is compatible with both hydronic and electric UFH. The three-layer cross-ply core and UV lacquer finish both handle UFH thermal cycling reliably.

•Maximum surface temperature: 27°C
•Switch off heating 24 hours before installation
•Restart gradually: 1–2°C per day to operating temperature
•Maintain indoor humidity 40–65% RH year-round
•UV lacquer handles UFH thermal cycling without cracking
  Thermal resistance 0.15 m²K/W maximum

Notes
Living Rooms & Open Plan
Excellent
The herringbone pattern reads most powerfully across a large floor area. The deep walnut colour creates a warm, anchored room quality. Allow pattern to run diagonally to lengthen the space.
Dining Rooms
Excellent
At seated eye level, the herringbone geometry and walnut grain are both visible. The UV lacquer handles chair leg movement and spills effectively.
Master Bedrooms
Excellent
The richness of American walnut creates a luxurious, restful atmosphere. Herringbone adds an understated formality appropriate to a master suite.
Hallways & Entrances
Excellent
Herringbone in a hallway is the classic application — the pattern follows the direction of movement and the UV lacquer handles heavy foot traffic.
Studies & Home Offices
Very Good
Dark walnut creates a focused, warm working environment. UV lacquer is resistant to chair leg abrasion with a chair mat.
Kitchens
Good
UV lacquer provides better moisture and spill resistance than wax oil. Wipe spills immediately. Glue-down installation is dimensionally stable under kitchen conditions.
Heritage Commercial
Very Good
For premium retail, hospitality, and office spaces where American walnut herringbone signals a high material specification.
Bathrooms
Not Recommended
Not suitable for persistent moisture exposure.
Care & Maintenance — UV Lacquer on American Walnut Herringbone
Task
Method
Daily
Soft brush head vacuum along the grain direction -- the deep heavy-scraped channels collect more dust than fine-texture floors; more frequent vacuuming than smooth floors recommended
Weekly
Damp mop with well-wrung cloth and pH-neutral wood floor cleaner for oiled floors -- no standing water; wax oil is not waterproof
Spills
Wipe immediately -- open wax oil surface at risk of staining; deep channels may collect liquid if not wiped promptly; the warm smoked tone helps conceal minor stains
Spot repair
Lightly abrade the worn area with 240-grit paper along the grain and re-apply wax oil locally -- the heavy scraped texture means local repairs blend very naturally into the surrounding surface variation
Full re-oil
Every 1-2 years for residential use; annually for high-traffic areas -- AMUER Floor Care Wax Oil or compatible hardwax oil; the deep channels absorb oil well and the re-oiling is particularly effective
Never
Steam mop · abrasive cleaners · bleach · solvent-based products · UV lacquer products · applying lacquer over wax oil

FAQ
Q1. What is American walnut herringbone engineered flooring?
American walnut herringbone engineered flooring is an engineered hardwood floor with a solid American walnut wear layer cut into short rectangular staves — typically 90×600mm — and laid in the herringbone V-pattern, combining the distinctive chocolate-brown colour and straight grain of Juglans nigra with the most architecturally significant parquet layout.
AMUER AM-21 is 90mm wide, 600mm long, 14/3mm total thickness with a 3mm solid American walnut wear layer, AB select-to-character grade, smooth surface, UV lacquer finish, and T&G edges for glue-down installation. The herringbone pattern transforms the floor from a surface into an architectural element of the room.
Q2. Why is herringbone pattern installed differently from plank flooring?
Herringbone pattern requires glue-down T&G installation — rather than the click floating installation used for plank floors — because the alternating stave angles in herringbone create a floor structure that depends on adhesive bond to the subfloor for lateral stability; floating installation would allow differential movement between staves at the many cross-grain T&G joints.
In practical terms: herringbone requires a flat, sound subfloor (3mm per 2m maximum), full-spread flexible wood floor adhesive, careful centre-line planning before laying starts, and professional installation. The result is a permanently stable, zero-movement floor that is significantly more rigid than a floating installation and performs better under heavy furniture and foot traffic.
Q3.  What is AB grade in American walnut, and what does it look like?
AB grade in American walnut selects boards with predominantly clear, straight heartwood grain and consistent chocolate-brown colour, with some natural character: occasional small tight knots, mineral streaks, and minor board-to-board colour variation. Boards are free of sapwood, open defects, and excessive colour contrast.
The result is a floor that reads as rich, consistent dark walnut — the species' defining quality expressed without distraction — with enough natural variation to confirm the material's authentic origin. At AB grade, the herringbone pattern and the walnut colour work together without competing with excessive natural marks.
Q4. Why does AM-21 use UV lacquer rather than wax oil?
UV lacquer is specified for AM-21 because the smooth surface and herringbone T&G construction both benefit from a hard surface film rather than a penetrating oil. The smooth face maximises the lacquer's natural lustre enhancement of the walnut grain; the many exposed T&G joint edges in herringbone are protected by the lacquer film from moisture ingress at the cross-grain joints.
Practically, UV lacquer requires less maintenance than wax oil — no periodic re-oiling programme, easier daily cleaning, better resistance to the concentrated foot traffic that herringbone patterns in hallways and living rooms typically receive. The UV lacquer factory process also produces a more uniform and durable finish than site-applied oils.
Q5. Can AM-21 herringbone be used with underfloor heating?
Yes — AM-21 is compatible with both hydronic and electric underfloor heating systems, with a maximum surface temperature of 27°C. The three-layer cross-ply engineered core minimises differential movement under UFH thermal cycling, and the UV lacquer surface film handles the temperature variation without cracking.
The glue-down installation required for herringbone is particularly well-suited to UFH applications: the adhesive bond eliminates the air gap that floating installations can trap between the floor and the heating surface, improving thermal transfer and reducing thermal mass between the heater and the room.
Q6.  How do I maintain UV lacquer on American walnut herringbone?
UV lacquer on AM-21 requires daily or frequent sweeping or vacuuming (herringbone joints collect grit at stave edges), weekly damp mopping with a pH-neutral wood floor cleaner, felt pads under all furniture, and immediate spill wiping. No periodic re-oiling or specialist treatment is required.
The main risk to UV lacquer is micro-scratching from fine grit particles — trapped under foot traffic or furniture, grit acts as abrasive on the lacquer surface. Door mats at entrances and regular vacuuming are the most effective maintenance measures. Deep scratches require professional re-lacquering; minor surface marks can be treated with a lacquer touch-up pen.
Q7. Can AM-21 be sanded and refinished?
Yes — AM-21 has a 3mm solid American walnut wear layer supporting 2–3 light sanding cycles over the floor's lifespan. Each sanding removes approximately 0.5–1mm of wear layer.
After sanding, AM-21 should be re-finished with UV lacquer (or a compatible site-applied lacquer) to restore the protective surface film. Note that site-applied lacquers will not produce the same factory-uniform result as the original UV-cured finish — professional sanding and re-lacquering by a specialist is recommended.
Q8. What is the minimum order for AM-21?
The standard minimum order for AMUER AM-21 is 200 m² per SKU from our China factory.
