CD Grade Brushed Broken Edge Oak Herringbone Engineered Flooring UV Lacquer — AM-23
CD Grade Brushed Broken Edge Oak Herringbone Engineered Flooring UV Lacquer — AM-23
AM-23 is a 90×600mm herringbone engineered oak floor in CD natural character grade with three compounding surface treatments — brushed grain texture, broken edge board profile, and invisible colour treatment — finished with UV lacquer: 14/3mm 3-layer construction with a 3mm solid European oak wear layer, tongue-and-groove (T&G) glue-down or nail-down installation.
The herringbone pattern of AM-23 — staves laid in an alternating 90° zigzag formation — is one of the most widely specified parquet patterns, combining the geometric interest of a diagonal pattern with the versatility to work across virtually every interior style from traditional to contemporary. At 90×600mm, the AM-23 stave produces a herringbone with a classic proportion: generous enough to read clearly as individual planks within the pattern, compact enough to work in rooms from hallway to open-plan scale.
AM-23's three surface treatments work in concert to produce a floor of unusual sophistication. The invisible treatment preserves the natural cool greige colour of European oak — no tinting, no warming, no modification — allowing the oak's characteristic cool, slightly grey-beige undertone to read clearly under UV lacquer. The brushed grain adds tactile depth without disrupting the pattern. The broken edge creates subtle shadow lines between staves that articulate the herringbone geometry with a hand-crafted quality. Together, they produce a herringbone floor that is simultaneously natural in colour, refined in surface quality, and characterful in grade.

CD Grade Brushed Broken Edge Oak Herringbone Engineered Flooring UV Lacquer — AM-23
Full Product Specification
Specification
AM-23 Detail
Product Code
AM-23
Species
Top layer European Oak ;  Poplar core and backing layer
Construction
3-Layer Engineered Wood Flooring  — cross-ply solid timber core for dimensional stability
Total Thickness
14/3mm (14mm total, 3mm wear layer)
Top Layer
3mm solid European oak — supports 1–2 light sanding cycles
Stave Dimensions
90mm wide × 600mm long — square-cut ends for herringbone assembly; each stave alternates at 90° to its neighbours to create the classic zigzag herringbone formation
Pattern
Pattern Herringbone — staves are square-cut (perpendicular ends) and laid in alternating 90° pairs; each stave end meets the side of the next stave, creating the characteristic broken zigzag joint that defines the herringbone pattern; distinct from chevron in that the joint is staggered rather than continuous, producing a softer, more textural diagonal rhythm
Colour
AM-23 Cool Greige Oak — the natural, unmodified colour of European oak preserved under invisible treatment and UV lacquer; a cool, slightly grey-toned beige — cooler and less golden than standard honey-sand oak; the CD grade colour variation from pale straw-grey sapwood to warm greige heartwood reads as a natural tonal range within the cool greige register; no warming, yellowing, or tinting — the invisible treatment ensures the final colour is the oak exactly as it grows, with its natural cool undertone intact
Surface Treatment
Invisible Treatment +Brushed+Broken Edge
Finish
UV Lacquer — hard, clear factory-applied finish; seals and protects all three surface treatments and the invisible-treated cool greige colour; scratch and stain resistant; easy daily maintenance; no periodic re-oiling required; the UV lacquer sheen on the brushed broken edge surface is matte-satin — refined and appropriate for the herringbone pattern format
Grading
CD — Natural Character Grade: filled knots, open knots, small black knots, natural checks, grain movement and figure; the CD grade adds individual character to each stave within the herringbone pattern — small knots read as natural focal points distributed across the zigzag formation; the cool greige colour of the invisible treatment makes CD grade knots read as warm caramel-brown dots against the grey-beige field, adding warmth to the overall cool palette
Edge Profile
Broken Edge — lightly distressed stave edges producing an irregular, worn profile; creates subtle shadow lines between staves in the assembled herringbone pattern; adds hand-crafted character to the geometric formation without disrupting the pattern's visual clarity
Installation
T&G (Tongue-and-Groove) — glue-down (recommended) or nail-down (timber subfloor only); floating not recommended for herringbone T&G format
Underfloor Heating
Compatible — maximum surface temperature 27°C; maintain 45–60% RH year-round; UV lacquer stable under heating cycles; use flexible adhesive for glue-down installations with UFH
Emission Class

PRODUCT OVERVIEW · AM-23 HERRINGBONE OAK

Cool Greige CD Oak at 90×600mm — Natural, Characterful, Three-Treatment Herringbone

AM-23 occupies a specific and carefully defined position in the AMUER herringbone range: it is the natural-colour, character-grade, multi-treatment herringbone — the floor for specifications where an authentic, natural-looking herringbone with handcrafted surface quality and genuine wood character is required, in the most versatile and contemporary-neutral colour available in European oak.
The invisible treatment is the foundation of AM-23's colour identity. European oak has a natural cool undertone — a slight grey-beige cast that is part of the species' natural colour but is often modified by surface treatments, oils, or UV processes that add warmth, yellow, or amber. The invisible treatment preserves this natural cool undertone exactly: no warming, no tinting, no modification. The result is a cool greige that reads as genuinely natural — more contemporary and design-neutral than warm honey-gold oak, compatible with both cool and warm interior palettes, and distinctly different from the warm tones that standard surface treatments add.
The CD grade adds the character dimension: small knots (round, warm caramel-brown focal points), natural figure, grain movement, and the CD colour variation from pale straw-grey sapwood to mid-warm greige heartwood. In the cool greige invisible-treated colour, the CD knots read as warm spots within the cool field — a colour contrast that adds visual warmth to a cool colour palette without modifying the base colour. The herringbone pattern distributes these knots across the zigzag formation, creating a floor where the natural character reads as part of the overall pattern composition rather than as individual defects.
The brushed surface and broken edge add the final surface dimension: the brushed grain gives AM-23 a tactile quality absent from smooth lacquered herringbone, and the broken edge gives each stave joint a fine shadow line that articulates the zigzag with a handcrafted character. Together, these three treatments produce a herringbone floor that looks and feels significantly more sophisticated than standard brushed-only or smooth herringbone products at the same price point.
Design Guide
AM-23's invisible-treated cool greige, CD character grade, broken edge detail, and herringbone pattern make it the most versatile parquet specification in the AMUER range — compatible with virtually every contemporary interior direction:
Japandi & Warm Minimalist
AM-23's cool greige invisible-treated colour is the definitive Japandi herringbone: pale enough to maximise light, cool enough to read as contemporary and restrained, and natural enough to feel authentically material. The CD grade knots and broken edge add the natural imperfection and individual character that Japandi aesthetics require. The herringbone pattern provides geometric interest without visual noise.
Contemporary & Transitional Residential
The cool greige herringbone of AM-23 is arguably the most commercially versatile floor specification in the AMUER range: the cool greige works with warm and cool interior palettes alike; the herringbone pattern suits traditional and contemporary interiors; the CD grade and broken edge add quality without restricting the design direction. Specify AM-23 when the floor needs to work across a broad range of tastes and contexts.
Farmhouse & Country Natural
AM-23's CD grade knots, broken edge handcrafted character, and natural invisible-treated colour read as authentically aged and naturally rustic in farmhouse and country traditional interiors. The herringbone pattern is historically appropriate for country house and period property floors. The cool greige reads as pale and airy in country house rooms with natural light from large windows.
T&G Installation — Chevron Pattern Laying Guide
Herringbone T&G Glue-Down Installation
AM-23 uses T&G glue-down (recommended) or nail-down installation. The herringbone pattern requires precise stave alignment — the broken edge makes the joint lines visible, so accurate layout is important.

· Subfloor flatness: 3mm per 2m maximum
· Adhesive: flexible polyurethane or MS polymer; full-spread trowel application across entire stave back
· Layout: establish the herringbone spine line — the central diagonal axis from which the pattern develops; snap chalk line from room centre or focal wall at 45° to the main room axis
· Dry-lay 10–15 staves along the spine line before committing to adhesive to confirm pattern direction
· Broken edge joints: do not fill or caulk — the broken edge shadow line is a design feature
· Expansion gap: 10mm minimum at all walls
· Acclimatise 48 hours at room temperature before installation
· Adhesive cure: 48 hours minimum before foot traffic
Underfloor Heating
AM-23 is compatible with both hydronic and electric UFH with T&G glue-down installation.

· Maximum surface temperature: 27°C
· Use flexible polyurethane adhesive compatible with UFH
· Switch off heating 48 hours before installation
· Restart: increase 1–2°C per day to target temperature
· Maintain 45–60% RH year-round
· UV lacquer is stable under heating cycles
· Thermal resistance: 0.15 m²K/W maximum

Notes
Living Rooms & Open-Plan
Exceptional
AM-23's herringbone pattern creates geometric interest in living rooms without the more formal or directional character of chevron. The cool greige colour and CD grade natural character produce a floor that works in contemporary, traditional, and transitional living room contexts equally well.
Entrance Halls & Landings
Exceptional
Herringbone is the classic entrance hall parquet pattern. AM-23's cool greige invisible-treated colour and broken edge articulation produce an entrance hall floor of understated sophistication. The pattern reads clearly and directs movement through the space.
Japandi & Scandinavian Interiors
Exceptional
The invisible-treated cool greige of AM-23 is perfectly aligned with the Japandi and Scandinavian palette. The CD grade natural character and broken edge add the natural material individuality that these aesthetics prize, while the cool colour works seamlessly with pale plaster, linen, and rattan.
Farmhouse & Country Traditional
Excellent
The CD grade knots, broken edge, and natural cool greige of AM-23 read as authentically aged and naturally rustic in farmhouse and traditional contexts. The herringbone pattern is historically appropriate for period and country property floors.
Master Bedrooms
Excellent
Cool greige herringbone creates a calm, refined bedroom floor. The UV lacquer is low-maintenance in bedroom use; the broken edge and CD character add warmth and individuality.
Dining Rooms
Excellent
Herringbone creates a defined dining area. UV lacquer resists spills effectively. The cool greige works with the full range of dining room palettes from dark and dramatic to pale and airy.
Hallways (Long & Narrow)
Good
Orient the herringbone spine diagonal along the hallway length to maximise the visual elongating effect of the pattern. AM-23's cool greige reads cleanly in narrow hallway proportions.
Bathrooms
Not Recommended
Not suitable for persistent moisture exposure.
Care & Maintenance — Brushed Broken Edge Herringbone UV Lacquer
Task
Method
Daily
Dry sweep or vacuum with soft brush head. For herringbone pattern floors, sweep in the direction of the individual stave grain (diagonally to the room walls at 45°) or along the herringbone spine to move debris out of the pattern joints efficiently. The cool greige colour of AM-23 shows dark grit and soil clearly — daily sweeping is the most important maintenance step.
Weekly
Damp mop with well-wrung cloth and pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner. UV lacquer is fully sealed — no risk to the invisible-treated natural colour or brushed surface from normal damp mopping. No steam mop, no standing water.
Spills
Wipe immediately with a dry cloth. UV lacquer resists household liquids effectively. Prompt action prevents penetration at herringbone joints or into CD grade open knots on the stave surface.
Broken edge joints
Vacuum with soft brush attachment along the herringbone joint lines to remove debris from the broken edge profile. Do not fill, caulk, or seal broken edge joints — they are a design feature of AM-23. Do not force water or cleaning products into the broken edge joint.
Open knots (CD grade)
Small open knots in the CD grade surface should be vacuumed with soft brush attachment to remove accumulated dust. Do not force water or cleaning products into open knots. If desired, open knots can be filled with a manufacturer-matched wood filler — though many prefer to leave them as a natural feature of the CD grade character.
Periodic maintenance
UV lacquer requires no periodic re-oiling. Buff with manufacturer-approved hardwood floor polish every 6–12 months to restore surface protection and sheen.
Scratches
Minor surface scratches: manufacturer-matched lacquer repair pen in cool greige oak tone. Deep scratches: professional sanding and lacquer recoating. Note: the broken edge profile at stave joints makes individual stave replacement more complex than square-edge herringbone — professional repair recommended for significant damage.
Never
Steam mop · standing water · bleach or acid cleaners · abrasive scrubbers · oil or wax products on lacquered surface · silicone-based polishes · filling or caulking broken edge joints · dragging heavy furniture across herringbone joints.

FAQ
Q1. What is brushed broken edge herringbone engineered oak flooring?
AM-23 is a 90×600mm herringbone engineered oak floor with three surface treatments (invisible colour treatment, brushed grain texture, broken edge stave profile) and UV lacquer finish, in CD natural character grade, 14/3mm 3-layer construction with a 3mm solid oak wear layer, T&G tongue-and-groove profile for glue-down or nail-down installation. Brushed means the soft early-wood fibres have been removed to expose the late-wood grain in tactile relief. Broken edge means each stave's long edges are lightly hand-distressed to an irregular profile, creating subtle shadow lines at herringbone joints. Invisible means the colour treatment is optically neutral — the natural cool greige colour of the European oak is preserved without modification.
Q2. What does 'invisible treatment' mean on AM-23?
The 'invisible' treatment on AM-23 is a colourless, non-tinting surface preparation applied before UV lacquer finishing. It is described as 'invisible' because it has no visible colour effect — it does not add warmth, yellow, tint, or modify the natural colour of the oak in any way. The purpose of the invisible treatment is to stabilise the oak surface fibres after brushing and prepare the surface for optimal UV lacquer adhesion, without the colour modification that standard oil primers, tinted primers, or pre-treatment oils typically add. The result is that AM-23's finished colour is purely the natural cool greige of the European oak — a more contemporary and colour-neutral result than the warm, golden tone that most treated oak floors display.
Q3.  Should broken edge joints in herringbone be filled or left open?
The broken edge joints in AM-23 should not be filled or caulked. The broken edge is a deliberate design feature — the subtle shadow line it creates at each herringbone joint is part of the floor's aesthetic. Filling the broken edge joints would destroy this character and make AM-23 appear as a standard square-edge herringbone. For cleaning, vacuum along the herringbone joint lines with a soft brush attachment to remove debris from the broken edge profile. If there is concern about debris accumulation in specific areas of high traffic, a compatible wood filler can be used in selected joints as a practical compromise — but this is not recommended as a standard finishing step.
Q4. Can AM-23 herringbone be installed over underfloor heating?
Yes — AM-23 is compatible with both hydronic and electric underfloor heating with T&G glue-down installation. Use a flexible polyurethane adhesive compatible with UFH. Maximum surface temperature 27°C. Maintain indoor humidity at 45–60% RH year-round. Switch off heating 48 hours before installation; restart gradually at 1–2°C per day. UV lacquer is stable under UFH heating cycles.
Q5. Why is CD grade used for AM-23 rather than AB grade?
CD grade is specified for AM-23 because the CD character — natural knots, figure, and grain movement — complements and enhances the three surface treatments (invisible, brushed, broken edge) that are AM-23's defining quality. The CD knots add natural warmth to the cool greige invisible-treated colour; the broken edge reads as more authentically aged and handcrafted in combination with CD character; and the overall effect of the three treatments is more visually rich with the natural variation of CD grade than with the clean consistency of AB. For specifications where maximum geometric clarity and colour consistency are the priority, AM-40 (AB select chevron) may be more appropriate. AM-23's CD grade is the correct choice for specifications where natural character and handcrafted authenticity take precedence.
Q6.  How should the herringbone pattern be oriented in the room?
The herringbone pattern should typically be oriented with the central spine diagonal running toward the main focal feature of the room — fireplace, large window, or main doorway — at 45° to the room walls. This creates the strongest visual impact and leads the eye toward the focal point. In hallways, orient the spine diagonal along the hallway length to maximise the elongating effect. Before installation, snap chalk lines at 45° to the room walls from the chosen centre or starting point, and dry-lay 10–15 staves along the spine line to confirm the pattern reads correctly before committing to adhesive.
Q7. What is the minimum order for AM-23?
Standard MOQ is 200 m² per SKU from our China factory. Free samples available — email arboren@arboren.com. Samples dispatched within 4-5 business days. OEM orders based on AM-23 specification available from 200 m² MOQ.
