The basket-weave pattern is an interlocking diagonal lattice of crossing 45° bands creating a continuous woven trellis effect — historically used as a less formal, evenly repeating alternative to compartmentalised patterns like Versailles. Both patterns share the same 600×600mm panel, elm species, CD grade, and finish, and can be mixed within a single floor installation. The star pattern suits feature medallion applications (entrance halls, focal panels); the basket-weave suits full-floor geometric installations in larger rooms.

Elm's natural grain character — pronounced cathedral patterns, dramatic swirling figure, and more irregular grain movement than oak — is particularly well suited to the visual drama of geometric parquet, where multiple strips meeting at angles within a panel create much of the pattern's visual interest. Elm's natural colour, a cooler grey-mauve to taupe-brown register, is also genuinely distinct from oak's warm honey-gold and walnut's chocolate-brown, offering designers a flooring colour option not commonly available elsewhere. Because elm is used far less frequently in engineered flooring than oak, EL-04 also provides a point of material rarity and individuality for design-led projects.

A common approach is to use the star pattern as a feature medallion (for example, centred in an entrance hall or beneath a dining table) surrounded by a field of basket-weave or plain plank, creating a varied, bespoke geometric composition. Plan the layout in advance to determine the placement and proportion of each pattern before installation.

The natural oil finish on EL-04 should be re-oiled approximately every 12–18 months in normal residential use. Re-oiling is a straightforward process: clean the floor thoroughly, allow to dry, apply a compatible maintenance natural oil with a cloth or buffing pad, and allow to absorb and cure for 24 hours before foot traffic. Elm's pronounced grain figure benefits visually from regular re-oiling, which deepens the natural colour and enhances the wood's grain depth over time. The geometric pattern's multiple internal joints should be checked and vacuumed regularly as part of routine maintenance.

Elm is a moderately hard hardwood suitable for residential and light commercial flooring use, though it is generally considered somewhat less hard than European oak. EL-04's 6mm wear layer — one of the thickest in the AMUER range — provides substantial durability and refinishing capacity (3–4 sanding cycles) that compensates for elm's moderate hardness relative to oak. For very high-traffic commercial applications, AMUER's oak UV lacquer products may be a more durable specification; for residential and feature panel use, EL-04's elm construction and thick wear layer provide ample durability.
