The Wide Plank Difference -- AM-05 at 220mm
AM-05 is a 220mm wide long plank engineered oak floor in DEF natural character grade with a brushed surface and low-sheen UV lacquer finish. Built as a 15/4mm three-layer engineered floor with a 4mm solid oak wear layer, it delivers the defining quality of wide plank flooring: fewer joints, a more seamless visual flow, and a more expansive presentation of the oak’s natural grain. Compared with a standard 190mm plank, the 220mm width allows the grain pattern to develop more fully, with broader flame figures, softer transitions between sapwood and heartwood, and a richer, more premium overall appearance.

The DEF grade creates a balanced natural look with small tight knots, gentle colour variation, and flowing grain movement, while avoiding the dramatic contrasts and heavy rustic character of full ABCD grade. This makes AM-05 especially suitable for open-plan residential interiors, hospitality spaces, and projects where the floor is intended to feel refined and architectural rather than overly rustic. The UV lacquer finish provides a durable, low-maintenance surface that resists scratching, staining, and everyday wear without requiring periodic re-oiling, while still preserving the tactile texture and visual depth of the brushed oak beneath.
Design Guide
AM-05's 220mm wide plank format and warm sandy-brown natural tone create a floor that elevates the perceived scale and quality of any interior. Three most-specified interior combinations:
AM-05 Premium Hospitality
Premium Hospitality
220mm wide plank oak in natural DEF grade is one of the most requested hotel room floor specifications in the European market. The warm sandy tone is universally appealing across demographic groups; the wide plank format signals quality without ostentation; UV lacquer suits housekeeping workflows. Against natural linen textiles, aged brass hardware, and warm-white walls, the floor anchors a premium room.
AM-05 Transitional Residential
Transitional Residential
AM-05 DEF grade is a floor that works with almost any residential interior style -- warm enough for traditional and transitional schemes, natural enough for contemporary and Scandinavian interiors. The 220mm format provides a premium foundation without demanding a specific interior direction. It is the wide-plank specification that interior designers reach for when the client's style is not yet fixed.
Installation & Room Suitability
Click Installation (Floating)
AM-05 uses Uniclic-compatible click floating installation -- boards lock without adhesive over an underlay. The wider board format requires careful subfloor preparation as any unevenness is more apparent over a wider plank.
•No adhesive required -- clean, reversible installation
•Subfloor flatness: 3mm per 2m maximum -- CRITICAL for wide plank; level carefully
•Expansion gap at all walls: minimum 12mm (wider gap than 190mm due to wider board)
•48-hour acclimatisation at room temperature before installation
•Install perpendicular to natural light source for best appearance
Stagger end joints: minimum 300mm offset between adjacent rows
Underfloor Heating
AM-05 is compatible with both hydronic and electric UFH systems. The 3-layer engineered construction resists the dimensional movement that solid wood and wider planks particularly experience under heating cycles.
✓Maximum surface temperature: 27 degrees C (hydronic and electric)
✓Switch off heating 48 hours before installation (wider board, longer acclimatisation)
✓After installation: increase 1-2 degrees C per day to operating temperature
✓Maintain indoor humidity 45-60% RH year-round (tighter range for wider boards)
✓UV lacquer handles UFH cycles well -- no cracking or peeling risk under correct temperature control
Thermal resistance 0.15 m2 K/W maximum

220mm wide plank in natural oak is a premium hospitality specification. UV lacquer suits housekeeping maintenance protocols.
Boutique Retail
Very Good
Wide plank UV lacquer oak is a premium retail floor specification -- durable, clean, warm.
Bathrooms
Not Recommended
Not suitable for persistent moisture -- specify SPC flooring for wet rooms.
Care & Maintenance -- UV Lacquer Finish
Task
Method
Daily
Dry sweep or vacuum with soft brush head — no beater bar; brush direction of grain
Weekly
Damp mop with well-wrung cloth and pH-neutral wood floor cleaner — no standing water on oiled surface
Spills
Wipe promptly -- UV lacquer is more water-resistant than oil but standing water at board joints can penetrate over time
Scratches
Minor surface scratches less visible due to brushed texture beneath the lacquer. Deep scratches require professional spot lacquer repair or local sanding.
Deep cleaning
Use a manufacturer-recommended lacquered floor cleaner annually -- do not use abrasive pads or harsh chemicals
Never
Steam mop · abrasive cleaners · bleach · solvent-based products · oil-based products (will cloud lacquer) · re-oiling (this is a lacquered floor, not an oiled floor)

FAQ
Q1. What is wide plank engineered oak flooring?
Wide plank engineered oak flooring is an engineered hardwood floor with board widths of 180mm or greater -- in the case of AM-05, 220mm -- producing a more expansive and seamless visual quality than standard-width flooring, with fewer joint lines across the room and a larger canvas for the natural grain of the oak to develop fully.
AMUER AM-05 is 220mm wide, 2,200mm long, 15/4mm total thickness with a 4mm solid European oak wear layer, DEF natural character grade, brushed surface, UV lacquer finish, and click installation. The 220mm width and 2,200mm length are both significantly larger than the 190mm x 1,900mm standard plank specification -- producing a visually premium, low-joint-count floor suitable for any application from residential to hospitality.
Q2. What is the difference between 220mm and 190mm engineered oak flooring?
220mm wide plank engineered oak flooring has 30mm more board width than standard 190mm flooring -- which is perceptible as a more generous, expansive visual quality with fewer joint lines across the room width, and a larger area for the natural grain figure of the oak to develop fully within each board.
In a standard 3m wide room, 220mm boards produce approximately 13 joint lines versus approximately 15 for 190mm boards. In wider spaces the difference compounds. The grain figures (oval and flame patterns in the centre of the board) are also wider and more fully developed at 220mm. AM-05 at 15/4mm also has a thicker wear layer (4mm versus 3mm), supporting more refinishing cycles over its lifetime.
Q3. What does DEF grade mean in engineered oak flooring?
DEF grade in engineered oak flooring designates a natural character grade specification -- boards with small tight knots, natural colour variation, flowing grain movement, and occasional minor mineral streaks -- producing a floor that looks genuinely natural and has visual life without the dramatic open knots and strong contrasts of full ABCD character grade.
In the European oak grading hierarchy: G (prime) is the cleanest; EF (select) allows minimal knots; DEF covers natural character from light to moderate; ABCD includes the full range including open knots and sapwood. AM-05 DEF sits in the middle of the character range -- natural-looking and warm without being dramatic or rustic.
Q4. Is UV lacquer the right finish for wide plank oak flooring?
Yes -- UV lacquer is particularly well-suited to wide plank oak flooring because it provides maximum surface durability with zero maintenance burden, making it appropriate for the premium specification context of wide plank flooring in residential, hospitality, and commercial applications.
The alternative, natural oil, requires periodic re-oiling every 1-3 years and more careful spill management. For wide plank flooring specified in hotel rooms, open-plan kitchens, and high-traffic living areas, UV lacquer's lower maintenance requirement is a significant practical advantage. The brushed surface texture beneath the lacquer preserves the natural appearance of the oak while the lacquer protects it.
Q5. Can AM-05 wide plank flooring be used over underfloor heating?
Yes -- AM-05 is compatible with both hydronic and electric underfloor heating systems, with a maximum recommended surface temperature of 27 degrees C.
Wide plank boards require slightly more careful humidity management than narrow plank flooring, as the wider board has more potential for edge movement if humidity swings significantly. Maintain indoor relative humidity at 45-60% RH throughout the year -- a slightly tighter range than for 190mm boards. Switch off heating 48 hours before installation and restart gradually after installation, increasing by 1-2 degrees C per day.
Q6. Can AM-05 be sanded and refinished?
Yes -- AM-05 has a 4mm solid oak wear layer, which supports 3-4 full sanding and refinishing cycles over the floor's lifespan -- more than the 2-3 cycles available from a standard 3mm wear layer product.
The thicker 4mm wear layer is one of the key specification advantages of AM-05 versus 190mm products at 14/3mm. After sanding, the floor can be re-finished with UV lacquer (professional application) or switched to a natural oil finish if a different surface character is preferred. For most well-maintained residential applications, AM-05 should not require full sanding for 20-30 years.
Q7.Is 220mm wide plank flooring suitable for small rooms?
Yes -- 220mm wide plank flooring is suitable for any room size, including small rooms; the design principle that wide planks only work in large rooms is a myth.
In smaller rooms, wide planks reduce the number of visible joint lines, which makes the floor surface appear calmer and less divided -- which typically makes the room feel larger, not smaller. The one genuine consideration for small rooms is that the wide plank format requires slightly more careful subfloor preparation, as any irregularity is more apparent over a wider board. Ensure subfloor flatness of 3mm per 2m before installation.
Q8. What is the minimum order for AM-05?
The standard minimum order for AMUER AM-05 is 200 m2 per SKU from our China factory.
