Smoked Hand Scraped Oak Wide Plank Engineered Flooring — AC-27
AC-27 is a 260mm wide plank engineered oak floor in CD natural character grade with a combined hand scraped and smoked surface treatment, finished with wax oil — 15/4mm three-layer construction with a 4mm solid oak wear layer — in a warm, rustic sandy-amber tone that evokes the appearance of aged, time-worn oak: the ammonia-fumed tannin warmth of smoked oak overlaid with the organic, irregular undulation of hand scraping, anchored by CD grade knots and flowing grain, sealed and nourished by penetrating wax oil. AC-27 is the most authentically reclaimed-look floor in the AMUER range, achieving the aesthetic of a centuries-old wide plank floor with the technical performance and dimensional stability of modern engineered construction.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW · AC-27 SMOKED HAND SCRAPED OAK
AC-27 is a 260mm wide plank engineered oak floor combining the warmth of ammonia smoking with the organic, aged texture of hand scraping and the natural character of CD grade — finished with penetrating wax oil. It is the most authentically heritage-styled product in the AMUER engineered range: a floor that reads as if lifted from a centuries-old manor house or farmhouse barn, with the material honesty of wide, character-rich oak boards that show the marks of their making, the warmth of wood that has aged and deepened with decades of exposure, and the tactile irregularity of a surface shaped by hand tools rather than machine processes.
The combination of hand scraping and smoking in AC-27 creates a surface of unusual visual complexity. Smoking first: the ammonia fuming penetrates the raw oak fibres, reacting with the natural tannins to produce a warm amber ground that is structural rather than surface-applied — colour that reads from within the wood rather than sitting on top of it. Hand scraping second: skilled craftsmen draw steel scrapers across the full 260mm board face in irregular, overlapping strokes, removing material unevenly along and across the grain to produce the characteristic faceted, undulating surface of historically scraped floors. The resulting surface has highlights and shadows across every board — the raised facets lighter, the recessed areas deeper — that shift visually as the viewing angle and light direction change throughout the day.
CD grade is the natural grading match for AC-27. Where EF grade on AC-08 uses the clean, minimal grain to let colour and texture dominate, CD grade on AC-27 adds the moderate knots, flowing grain character, and natural colour variation of a genuine character-grade floor to the hand scraped and smoked surface. The CD grade knots read as part of the aged, reclaimed aesthetic: tight, filled, structurally stable, and visually integrated into the warm amber board face. The grain flows organically across the 260mm width, and the occasional mineral streaks and colour shifts within the amber ground reinforce the impression that each board is a unique piece of material with its own history.
Wax oil is the only appropriate finish for AC-27's aesthetic intent. The penetrating wax oil follows the topography of the hand scraped surface, feeding the fibres at every depth of the undulation — in the raised facet peaks and in the recessed channels between scraping strokes alike. A film-forming finish such as UV lacquer would visually flatten the hand scraped surface by creating a uniform reflective plane above the undulations; wax oil preserves the full three-dimensional quality of the scraping, allowing the light-catching and shadow-casting properties of the hand scraped facets to read at their maximum depth and clarity.
Design Guide
AC-27’s smoked rustic amber tone, hand scraped texture, CD character grade, and wax oil finish make it the most strongly positioned floor in the AMUER range for heritage and rustic-contemporary applications:

Heritage Manor & Country House
AC-27 is the floor that reads as if it has always been there. In period manor houses, Georgian townhouses, and English country houses, the smoked hand scraped oak at 260mm evokes the wide-plank floors of estates built centuries before engineered flooring existed. Against aged stone walls, antique furniture, faded Persian rugs, and linen curtains, the hand scraped smoked surface reads as a material that belongs in the space — never designed in, never selected from a sample board.

Barn Conversion & Rustic Contemporary
In barn conversions and rustic contemporary interiors that pair aged agricultural fabric with modern comforts, AC-27 bridges the material gap between old and new. Against exposed timber beams, raw concrete, aged steel, and oversized industrial glazing, the smoked hand scraped oak provides the warm, authentic material anchor that softens the industrial elements without compromising their character. The 260mm board width matches the generous scale of converted agricultural spaces.
Installation & Room Suitability
Click Installation (Floating)
AC-27 uses Uniclic-compatible click floating installation. The 260mm extra-wide format requires meticulous subfloor preparation. Note: the hand scraped surface means there is natural height variation across the board face — this is an intentional aesthetic feature, not a manufacturing defect.
•No adhesive required — click lock floating installation
•Subfloor flatness: 3mm per 2m maximum — critical for 260mm board width
•Expansion gap at all walls: minimum 15mm (wider gap required for 260mm format)
•48-hour acclimatisation at room temperature before installation
•Install perpendicular to room entry for optimal visual effect
•Stagger end joints: minimum 400mm between adjacent rows
Note: hand scraped surface variation is intentional — do not attempt to level or sand board faces before installation
Underfloor Heating
AC-27 is compatible with both hydronic and electric UFH. Extra-wide 260mm boards and wax oil finish require strict humidity management throughout the year.
•Maximum surface temperature: 27°C (hydronic and electric)
•Switch off heating 48 hours before installation
•After installation: increase 1–2°C per day to target temperature
•Maintain indoor humidity 45–60% RH year-round — critical for both 260mm and wax oil finish
•Wax oil is more moisture-sensitive than lacquer — maintain humidity diligently
Thermal resistance 0.15 m²K/W maximum
Room Suitability
| Room / Application | Suitability | Notes | |
| Heritage & Period Properties | Excellent | AC-27 is the definitive engineered floor specification for heritage, period, and listed properties. The hand scraped smoked surface and CD character grade read as entirely appropriate to historic buildings where authentic-looking natural wood floors are essential. | |
| Barn Conversions | Excellent | The reclaimed-look aesthetic of AC-27 is ideally suited to barn conversions and agricultural building conversions where the floor must read as natural, aged, and of a piece with the existing fabric of the building. | |
Country Houses & Farmhouses | Excellent | AC-27 is the specification for country house, manor house, and farmhouse floor replacement or new build. Wide, character-rich, smoked, hand scraped oak is the traditional material for these applications.
Open Plan Living | Excellent | 260mm smoked hand scraped boards create a warm, layered floor surface in open-plan spaces. The hand scraped variation reads as a rich, complex material at distance across a large area.
Living Rooms | Excellent | AC-27’s rustic amber tone and aged texture create a warm, characterful living room floor. The wax oil appearance improves and deepens with successive re-oiling over years.
Bedrooms | Excellent | The matte wax oil surface and warm amber tone are well suited to bedrooms. The tactile hand scraped surface adds a sensory quality appropriate to intimate living spaces.
Hallways | Very Good | The warm amber tone conceals marks and grit better than pale floors. Hand scraped undulation may trap fine grit — regular vacuuming along the scraping direction essential. Periodic re-oiling important in hallways.
Kitchen | Good with care | Wax oil less water-resistant than lacquer; wipe spills immediately. Hand scraped channels can trap moisture — clean promptly. The warm amber tone is forgiving of kitchen marks compared to pale floors.
Bathrooms | Not Recommended | Not suitable for persistent moisture. Both wax oil finish and hand scraped channels are vulnerable in wet environments — specify SPC flooring for bathrooms.
Care & Maintenance — Wax Oil on Smoked Hand Scraped Surface
| Task | Method | ||
| Daily | Dry sweep or vacuum with soft brush head along the scraping direction — the hand scraped undulations can trap fine grit and dust in the recessed channels; regular removal prevents abrasive wear of the wax oil surface. No beater bar. | ||
| Weekly | Damp mop with well-wrung cloth and pH-neutral wax oil floor cleaner — no standing water. Work along the grain and scraping direction. Use only wax oil floor cleaners; standard household cleaners strip the oil finish. Do not use steam mop. | ||
| Spills | Wipe immediately — the hand scraped recesses can accumulate moisture; prolonged liquid contact risks grain raising, tide marks, or staining. Wax oil is less water-resistant than lacquer. The amber tone is more forgiving of liquid marks than pale floors. | ||
Periodic re-oiling | Re-oil every 1–3 years depending on traffic — use the same wax oil product as original factory finish. Apply thinly, working into the hand scraped recesses with a cloth or soft brush, allow to penetrate 15–20 minutes, buff off excess from raised facets. Each re-oiling deepens the amber tone and feeds the full undulating surface.
Spot repair | Wax oil floors are spot-repairable. Lightly sand the affected area along the grain direction — be aware that sanding the hand scraped surface will remove some of the scraping relief and may require a light re-scraping pass for an invisible repair. Re-oil and blend. For smoked surface spot repair, color-matching oil may be needed.
Hand scraped channels | The recessed channels of the hand scraped surface should be vacuumed with a soft brush attachment working along the scraping direction. A soft-bristle brush can be used to dislodge compacted debris from deep recesses before vacuuming.
Never | Steam mop · standing water · standard household cleaners · bleach-based products (will strip smoked color) · lacquer or polyurethane products · abrasive pads or scourers · sanding the full floor without professional involvement (affects hand scraped texture).

FAQ
Q1. What is smoked hand scraped oak engineered flooring?
Smoked hand scraped oak engineered flooring is a wide plank engineered hardwood floor combining ammonia fuming — which reacts with the oak's natural tannins to produce a warm amber colour from within the wood — with hand scraping, a craft process in which steel scrapers are drawn across each board face in irregular strokes to create an organic, undulating, aged-looking surface.
AMUER AC-27 is 260mm wide, 2,200mm long, 15/4mm total thickness with a 4mm solid European oak wear layer, CD natural character grade, hand scraped and smoked surface treatments, wax oil finish, and click installation. It is the most authentically reclaimed-look floor in the AMUER range — warm, aged, characterful, and genuinely unique board to board.
Q2. What is hand scraped surface treatment on oak flooring?
Hand scraped surface treatment on oak flooring is a craft process in which a craftsman draws a steel scraper across each board face in irregular, overlapping strokes, removing wood material unevenly to create a characteristically undulating, faceted surface that resembles the appearance of floors aged and worn by centuries of use.
In AC-27, the hand scraping is applied after smoking, creating an organic, irregular surface on the smoked amber ground. No two hand scraped boards are identical — each carries the specific pattern of the craftsman’s strokes. The hand scraped facets create highlights and shadows across each board face that shift with the light direction throughout the day, giving the floor a visual depth that cannot be replicated by mechanical surface treatments.
Q3. How is hand scraped different from saw mark on oak flooring?
Hand scraped creates an organic, irregular, three-dimensional undulation on the board face by drawing steel scrapers in uneven, overlapping strokes — each board unique; saw mark creates precise, uniform parallel linear striations by drawing circular saw blades across the board face — mechanically consistent across all boards.
The aesthetic difference is significant: hand scraped reads as aged, rustic, artisan, and heritage-appropriate; saw mark reads as contemporary, industrial, precise, and architectural. Hand scraped produces the most tactile surface in the AMUER range, with a pronounced undulation clearly felt underfoot; saw mark produces a fine directional texture that is subtler underfoot. AC-27 is the heritage floor; AC-08 is the contemporary warm floor.
Q4. Does the hand scraped surface add to the reclaimed look?
Yes — the hand scraped surface is the primary visual element that gives AC-27 its reclaimed-look aesthetic, creating the irregular, worn-looking surface that characterises centuries-old wide plank floors that have been planed and scraped by hand tools over generations of use.
Combined with the smoked amber colour, CD grade knots and grain character, and the warm matte quality of the wax oil finish, the hand scraped surface of AC-27 creates a floor that reads as a genuine aged material rather than a new product designed to look old. The effect is enhanced by the 260mm board width — the wide plank format allows the hand scraped pattern to read fully across each board, which at narrow widths would be truncated.
Q5. Can AC-27 be used over underfloor heating?
Yes — AC-27 engineered hardwood flooring is compatible with both hydronic and electric underfloor heating systems, with a maximum recommended surface temperature of 27°C.
The 3-layer engineered construction resists dimensional movement under heating cycles. Extra-wide 260mm boards and wax oil finish both require careful humidity management year-round — maintain 45–60% RH. Switch off heating 48 hours before installation and restart gradually after installation, increasing by 1–2°C per day. Wax oil is more moisture-sensitive than lacquer; diligent humidity control is especially important for AC-27.
Q6. How do you clean hand scraped oak flooring?
Hand scraped wax oil oak flooring should be vacuumed with a soft brush attachment along the scraping direction to remove grit and dust from the recessed channels, and damp mopped with a well-wrung cloth and pH-neutral wax oil floor cleaner — never steam mopped, never flooded, and never cleaned with standard household cleaners or bleach.
The recessed channels of the hand scraped surface can accumulate fine grit that abrades the wax oil finish if not removed regularly — daily or frequent dry vacuuming with a soft brush head is the most important maintenance step for AC-27. Periodic re-oiling every 1–3 years feeds the full undulating surface and deepens the amber tone over time.
Q7. Can AC-27 be sanded and refinished?
Yes — AC-27 has a 4mm solid oak wear layer supporting 3–4 full sanding and refinishing cycles over the floor’s lifespan, though refinishing requires professional handling to preserve or restore the hand scraped texture.
Sanding AC-27 will remove or significantly reduce the hand scraped surface relief — the depth of the undulation is part of the 4mm wear layer. After sanding, the hand scraping can be re-applied by a skilled craftsman or finishing workshop. The smoked colour will also be reduced by sanding; the floor can be re-smoked or finished in a different tone. Full refinishing is a professional operation for smoked hand scraped floors.
Q8. What is the minimum order for AC-27?
The standard minimum order for AMUER AC-27 is 200 m² per SKU from our China factory.
