Deep Smoked Oak 150mm Long Plank — DS-02
DS-02 is a 150mm long plank deep smoked oak engineered floor in DE high natural character grade, treated with embossment and smoking, finished with UV lacquer: 14/3mm three-layer construction with a 3mm solid European oak wear layer, click floating installation. DS-02 belongs to the Deep Smoked series — AMUER’s darkest and most dramatically toned range.
The smoking process exposes the raw oak boards to ammonia fumes or smoke, reacting with the natural tannins in the timber to produce a deep, rich chocolate-brown to espresso tone that penetrates into the wood fibres rather than sitting as a surface pigment.
The result is a dark, complex colour that varies board to board with the DE grade’s natural tannin concentration, producing a floor with tonal depth and movement rather than a flat, uniform dark colour. The embossment treatment applies before or after smoking to accentuate the natural grain structure with a raised relief texture — ensuring the dark smoked colour reads over a distinctly natural wood surface rather than a flat or painted appearance.
The DE grade adds the final layer of drama: prominent knots, swirling grain, and significant colour variation beneath the smoke, all contributing to a floor that is dark, rich, characterful, and unmistakably natural oak. UV lacquer completes DS-02 with a durable, low-maintenance protective film that preserves the deep smoked colour without alteration.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW · DS-02 DEEP SMOKED OAK
Deep Smoked at 150mm — Smoking and Embossment on DE Grade Oak
DS-02 is the embossment-and-smoked product in the AMUER Deep Smoked series: a 150mm long plank in DE high natural character grade, smoked to a rich chocolate-brown and embossed with accentuated grain texture, finished with UV lacquer and installed as a click floating floor. The DS series represents AMUER’s darkest and most dramatically coloured oak range — products where the smoking process transforms the oak’s natural honey-gold into a deep, rich, penetrating brown that could not be produced by any staining or pigment process.
The smoking process on DS-02 is a chemical reaction rather than a surface coating. When oak is exposed to ammonia fumes or smoke, the ammonia reacts with the natural tannins present in the oak fibres to produce a deep brown-to-espresso colour. Because the reaction is driven by the timber’s own tannin content — and DE grade oak has significant tannin variation from board to board and within each board — the smoked colour is inherently varied: some boards smoke to a deeper espresso-brown, others to a warmer mid-chocolate, and within each board the grain structure, knot halos, and tannin-rich zones smoke at different intensities. The result is a dark floor with genuine tonal complexity rather than the flat uniformity of a dark-stained or dark-pigmented floor.
The embossment treatment is essential on DS-02. A smoked floor without embossment risks reading as flat, lacquered, or artificial — the dark colour obscures surface texture that a natural or lighter floor reveals through its grain. The embossment counters this by pressing the grain structure into a raised relief, so that the dark colour reads over a clearly textured natural wood surface. In raking or directional light — sunlight from a window, angled artificial light — the embossed grain ridges catch highlight and the channels hold shadow, adding visual depth to the chocolate-brown ground. The DE grade’s bold knots, swirling grain, and prominent features all receive the embossment treatment, making the texture dramatically varied across each board face.
UV lacquer is the definitive finish for DS-02. The smoked colour is fully stable within the oak fibres and does not require periodic re-oiling to maintain. UV lacquer provides a hard, durable protective film that preserves the dark chocolate-brown exactly as produced — without the tonal shift that a wax or oil product could introduce over successive maintenance cycles. The satin sheen level of the UV lacquer adds controlled surface reflectance that enhances the depth of the dark colour without creating a high-gloss or plastic appearance.
Design Guide
DS-02’s deep chocolate-brown smoked tone, embossed grain texture, 150mm long plank format, and satin UV lacquer finish make it one of the most dramatically rich floors in the AMUER range. It works across dark, moody, warm, and maximalist interior contexts — and as a bold contrast floor in pale, minimalist settings.
Dark & Moody
Atmospheric
DS-02 is the definitive floor for dark, moody, and atmospheric interiors. The deep chocolate-brown smoked oak creates an enveloping, warm material ground beneath intense wall colours. Against deep teal, charcoal, forest green, or navy, the smoked oak reads as a rich, natural complement rather than competing for darkness. The embossed grain adds texture and natural quality at close range.
Warm Luxury &
Maximalist Warmth
In warm contemporary luxury interiors, DS-02’s chocolate-brown smoked oak provides a rich, premium material foundation. The dark tone pairs with warm white or ivory walls and warm-gold or brass fixtures to create a deeply luxurious contrast: the pale ceiling and walls reflect light, the dark floor absorbs it, creating a room with enormous visual depth and warmth.
Bold Contrast
& Scandi Dark
In Scandinavian-dark and bold-contrast interiors, DS-02 creates a dramatic visual ground beneath bright white walls and minimal furniture. The contrast between a dark smoked oak floor and white-painted walls and ceiling is one of the most powerful compositional moves in contemporary residential interiors — the floor anchors the space with warm material darkness while the white walls provide light and openness above.
Installation & Room Suitability
Click Installation (Floating)
DS-02 uses Uniclic-compatible click floating installation. No adhesive required. Boards lock together and float over the subfloor on an approved acoustic underlay.
•No adhesive — click lock floating installation
•Subfloor flatness: 3mm per 2m maximum
•Approved acoustic/thermal underlay: 3mm maximum
•Expansion gap: minimum 12mm at all walls
•Acclimatisation: 48 hours at room temperature before installation
•Install boards along the longest room dimension
•Stagger end joints: minimum 300mm between adjacent rows
•Micro-bevel joints: do not fill or caulk
Dark tone: lay boards with grain direction consistent across the room for most even appearance
Underfloor Heating
DS-02 is compatible with both hydronic and electric UFH. The dark smoked colour is stable under UV lacquer and does not shift with temperature cycling.
•Maximum surface temperature: 27°C
•Switch off UFH 48 hours before installation
•After installation: increase +1–2°C per day to target
•Maintain indoor humidity: 45–60% RH year-round
•UV lacquer more moisture-resistant than wax oil — suitable for UFH
•Thermal resistance: 0.15 m²K/W maximum
Dark floor and light notes
Dark floors show light dust, pet hair, and footprints more readily than mid-tone floors. Regular dry sweeping (daily in high-traffic areas) is the most important maintenance habit for DS-02. The UV lacquer makes cleaning easy, but frequency matters more on a dark floor than on a pale or mid-tone surface.
Room Suitability
| Room / Application | Suitability | Notes | |
| Living Rooms | Exceptional | DS-02 creates a rich, dramatic living room floor. The deep chocolate-brown smoked tone with embossed grain texture reads as a premium, design-led material choice. The dark tone grounds a living room with warm depth, working equally well with pale walls (for maximum contrast) and dark or rich wall colours (for an enveloping, moody atmosphere). | |
| Open Plan Living | Exceptional | Dark smoked oak creates a dramatic unified ground across open-plan spaces. At 150mm width, DS-02 creates a strong board rhythm across a large floor area. The dark tone conceals everyday marks and kitchen foot traffic effectively — a practical advantage in an open-plan setting. | |
Moody & Dark Interiors | Exceptional | DS-02 is the definitive AMUER floor for dark, moody, and atmospheric interior schemes. Against deep teal, charcoal, forest green, navy, or dark plaster walls, the chocolate-brown smoked floor reads as a warm, enveloping material ground. The embossed grain adds texture at close range without competing with the wall colour.
Bedrooms | Excellent | Deep smoked oak creates an enveloping, atmospheric bedroom floor. The dark tone is particularly effective in bedrooms where warmth and drama are desired over brightness. UV lacquer requires no re-oiling maintenance.
Dining Rooms | Excellent | UV lacquer resists dining spills. The dark smoked tone conceals minor marks effectively. Works exceptionally in candlelit or warm-lit dining environments where the chocolate-brown richness of DS-02 is enhanced.
Hallways | Very Good | 150mm dark smoked boards create a bold hallway statement. UV lacquer resists abrasion. Dark tone conceals tracked-in marks effectively.
Home Offices | Very Good | Dark oak creates a focused, premium working environment. The embossed grain adds material interest without distraction. Protect with desk chair mat.
Kitchen (dry zone) | Good with care | UV lacquer resists kitchen spills effectively. Dark tone very forgiving of everyday kitchen marks and splashes. Suitable for dining or seating zones; avoid installation directly in front of sink.
Bathrooms / Wet Areas | Not Recommended | Not suitable for wet environments.
Care & Maintenance — UV Lacquer on Deep Smoked Embossed Oak
| Task | Method | ||
| Daily | Dry sweep or vacuum with a soft brush head along the grain direction. Dark floors show light dust, pet hair, and lint more readily than pale or mid-tone floors — regular sweeping is the most important maintenance habit for DS-02. The embossed grain channels collect fine grit; remove before it abrades the UV lacquer surface. | ||
| Weekly | Damp mop with a well-wrung cloth and pH-neutral UV lacquer floor cleaner only. No steam mop. No standard household cleaners. No standing water. The dark smoked colour is stable under UV lacquer and will not be affected by normal damp mopping. | ||
Spills | Wipe immediately with a dry cloth. UV lacquer provides strong resistance to household liquid spills. Do not allow water to stand in micro-bevel joints.
Micro-bevel joints | Do not fill or caulk micro-bevel joints. The uniform V-groove shadow line is an intentional design feature. Clean with a soft vacuum brush attachment along the joint direction.
No re-oiling | UV lacquer requires no periodic re-oiling. The smoked colour is stable within the oak fibres and does not require maintenance oil to preserve it. Never apply wax, oil, or maintenance oil to DS-02 — these will cause adhesion failure with the UV lacquer.
Smoked colour stability | The deep smoked colour on DS-02 is stable under UV lacquer and will not lighten, grey, or shift over time under normal residential use and standard cleaning. UV lacquer protects the smoked colour from UV light exposure that could otherwise cause gradual lightening of smoked surfaces in wax oil finishes.
Furniture | Felt pads under all furniture legs. Protective mat under desk chairs. The dark tone will show scratches from furniture movement more visibly than mid-tone floors if the UV lacquer is damaged.
Never | Steam mop · standing water at joints · wax or oil on UV lacquer · standard household cleaners with ammonia or bleach · abrasive pads · filling micro-bevel joints.

FAQ
Q1. What is deep smoked oak engineered flooring?
Deep smoked oak engineered flooring is a hardwood floor where European oak boards are subjected to an ammonia or smoke treatment that reacts chemically with the natural tannins in the timber, producing a deep chocolate-brown to espresso colour that penetrates into the wood fibres rather than sitting as surface pigment. AMUER DS-02 is 150mm wide, 1,900mm long, 14/3mm total thickness with a 3mm solid European oak wear layer, DE high natural character grade, two surface treatments (embossment + smoked), micro-bevel edge, UV lacquer finish, and click floating installation.
Q2. Is smoked oak the same as stained dark oak?
No — smoked oak and dark-stained oak are fundamentally different. Smoking is a chemical reaction between ammonia or smoke and the natural tannins in the oak fibres: the resulting colour penetrates into the wood and is inherently varied, reflecting the natural tannin variation of the timber. A smoked floor has depth and movement in its dark colour. Dark staining applies a surface pigment that sits on the wood: stain colour is uniform, does not vary with tannin concentration, and does not penetrate into the fibres in the same way. If you sand a smoked floor, the colour continues below the surface; if you sand a stained floor, you remove the colour at a defined depth. DS-02 is genuinely smoked — the colour is in the wood, not on it.
Q3. What is the difference between DS-01, DS-02, and DS-03?
All three DS series products share the same 150mm long plank, click floating installation, and deep smoked colour base. The differences are surface texture: DS-01 uses deep smoked + brushed (fine grain texture, refined appearance); DS-02 (this product) uses embossment + smoked (raised relief grain texture, bold and tactile); DS-03 uses saw mark + smoked (parallel saw marks, directional industrial texture). DS-01 is DEF grade; DS-02 and DS-03 are DE grade. Choose based on the texture aesthetic required for the project.
Q4. Will the smoked colour fade or lighten over time?
DS-02’s smoked colour is fully protected under the UV lacquer finish. UV lacquer provides a barrier against UV light that would otherwise cause gradual lightening of a smoked surface — smoked oak floors with wax oil or natural oil finish can lighten over time with UV exposure in south-facing rooms. Under DS-02’s UV lacquer, the chocolate-brown smoked colour remains stable. The lacquer also means no periodic re-oiling is required to maintain the colour, as would be needed on a smoked wax-oil floor.
Q5. Can DS-02 be used over underfloor heating?
Yes — DS-02 is compatible with both hydronic and electric UFH, maximum surface temperature 27°C. Maintain indoor humidity at 45–60% RH year-round. The UV lacquer finish is more humidity-resistant than wax oil. Click floating installation accommodates thermal expansion without adhesive constraint. Switch off UFH 48 hours before installation and activate gradually after installation.
Q6. Do dark floors show dirt more than pale floors?
DS-01's most important maintenance requirement is regular dry sweeping — the dark smoked colour shows dust, pet hair, and light debris very readily. Daily sweeping with a soft brush head, weekly damp mopping with pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner, and periodic buffing with manufacturer-approved hardwood floor polish every 6–12 months. No periodic re-oiling required (UV lacquer). No steam mop. Always sweep along the grain direction to avoid pushing debris into the brushed texture relief.
Q7. What is the minimum order for DS-02?
The standard minimum order for AMUER DS-02 is 200 m² per SKU from our China factory. Free samples are available — email arboren@arboren.com. Samples dispatched to EU, Australian, and most international addresses within 4-5 business days.
