Smoked Brushed Oak 70mm Herringbone Engineered Flooring — AC-21
AC-21 is a 70mm smoked and brushed oak herringbone engineered floor in ABCD natural character grade, finished with UV lacquer: 14/3mm three-layer construction with a 3mm solid European oak wear layer, tongue-and-groove glue-down installation. AC-21 is the narrowest herringbone in the AMUER range at 70mm, and the combination of this compact width with a smoked and brushed surface creates a floor of exceptional visual complexity and tonal depth. The 70mm width produces a fine, densely-repeat herringbone zigzag that multiplies the V-pattern across the floor with far greater frequency than wider-format herringbones — at 70mm, the individual board is almost square in proportion (70×500mm, 7:1 ratio), and the herringbone field reads as a richly textured geometric ground plane rather than a sequence of individual wide boards. The smoking treatment deepens and enriches the natural oak tannins to produce an olive-brown to dark warm-brown tone — warmer and more complex than a cool grey smoked floor, darker and more sophisticated than natural honey-gold oak. The brushed surface opens the grain to add visible texture without the heavy distressing of saw-mark or hand-scraped treatments, ensuring the smoked colour reads over a natural wood texture. ABCD grade delivers the balanced natural character of European oak across the full floor: from nearly-clear boards to boards with fine pin knots and gentle grain movement, the ABCD range provides natural variation without the extreme drama of DE or DEF grades. UV lacquer completes AC-21 with a durable, low-maintenance finish that locks in the smoked colour and protects the brushed surface without periodic re-oiling.

Stave Dimensions | 70mm × 500mm — 70mm wide herringbone board; 500mm long; 7:1 length-to-width ratio; the narrowest herringbone format in the AMUER range |
Pattern | Herringbone — 45° classic herringbone (point parquet); square-ended boards in alternating left/right orientations; at 70mm width, the herringbone repeat is fine and dense, multiplying across the floor as a richly textured geometric field |
Colour | AC-21 Smoked Oak — dark olive-brown to warm dark-brown; the smoking process reacts with the natural tannins in the ABCD grade oak to produce a deep, complex olive-toned brown; warmer and more complex than a cool grey smoked floor; darker and richer than natural honey-gold oak; the ABCD grade’s more moderate tannin variation produces a more cohesive overall smoked tone than DE or DEF grades, with the floor reading as a unified dark olive-brown with natural board-to-board variation rather than the dramatic tonal swings of a higher-character grade; the smoked colour varies subtly with lighting: cooler and more olive in north or daylight, warmer and more chocolate in south-facing or warm artificial light |
Surface Treatment | Two treatments applied in combination: (1) Brushed: wire-brush treatment opens the natural oak grain structure, removing softer early-wood fibres and leaving harder late-wood grain ridges raised; adds visible grain texture across each board face; on the narrow 70mm herringbone, the brushed grain texture in alternating boards runs in opposing 45° directions, creating a fine light-and-shadow interplay across the dense zigzag field in directional light; (2) Smoked: ammonia or smoke treatment reacts with the natural tannins in the oak fibres to produce a deep olive-brown penetrating colour; the smoked colour pools more deeply in the brushed grain channels than on the raised ridges, creating a subtle darker-lighter tonal variation across the brushed surface that reads as natural depth in the installed floor |
Finish | UV Lacquer — UV-cured polyurethane lacquer; hard, durable film over the smoked brushed surface; locks in the smoked colour and preserves the brushed grain texture; satin sheen level; low-maintenance: no periodic re-oiling required; strong resistance to everyday wear, scuffs, and household liquid spills |
Grading | ABCD — Balanced Natural Character Grade: full ABCD grade includes the complete range from nearly-clear boards (A and B character) through to boards with moderate knots and grain movement (C and D character); warm colour range from pale cream-gold to amber-honey beneath the smoking; fine pin knots and mineral streaks in the higher-character boards; ABCD grade produces a balanced, varied floor without the extreme drama of DE or DEF grades — the correct specification when the smoked colour is the primary design statement rather than extreme natural character |
Edge Profile | Square Edge — no bevel or chamfer; boards sit flush at every herringbone joint; allows the herringbone zigzag geometry to read as a seamless continuous field; square edge is the standard edge profile for herringbone click floatingSquare Edge — no bevel or chamfer; boards sit flush at every herringbone joint; at 70mm width, the square edge is especially important — any bevel on a narrow herringbone board would be visually dominant; square edge allows the dense herringbone geometry to read as a seamless continuous field |

PRODUCT OVERVIEW · AC-21 SMOKED BRUSHED OAK HERRINGBONE
70mm Herringbone in Smoked Oak — Fine Geometry, Deep Colour
AC-21 is the smoked and brushed 70mm herringbone in the AMUER range: the narrowest herringbone format in the catalogue, combined with a smoking treatment that produces the most distinctively toned colour in the herringbone series. At 70mm, the herringbone pattern produces a fine, densely-repeat zigzag that is fundamentally different in visual character from the wider 90mm and 120mm formats: the individual boards are nearly square in proportion, the V-repeat multiplies across the floor with high frequency, and the accumulated herringbone field reads as a rich geometric texture rather than a sequence of individual wide planks. From a distance, a 70mm herringbone floor has a visual complexity comparable to a woven textile — the pattern is legible as herringbone, but the density of the repeat creates a floor surface that seems to have intrinsic texture and movement.
The smoked colour on AC-21 is an olive-brown to warm dark-brown — a tone that occupies a distinctive position in the AMUER colour range. It is produced by the smoking process reacting with the ABCD grade oak’s natural tannins, which are present in moderate and relatively consistent concentrations compared with the higher-variation DE and DEF grades. The result is a smoked colour that reads as a unified dark olive-brown across the installed floor, with natural board-to-board variation that prevents flatness without the dramatic tonal swings of a higher-character smoked floor. The olive undertone — produced by the specific tannin chemistry of the ABCD grade oak beneath the smoking — is what distinguishes AC-21’s smoked colour from the warmer chocolate-brown of DS-02 or the amber-brown of AC-08: it is cooler, more complex, and more architectural in character.
The brushed surface is the correct choice for AC-21. At 70mm width, there is limited board face area on each individual board for complex distressing treatments: brushing adds visible grain texture that is scaled correctly to the narrow board format, without overwhelming the individual board with surface detail that competes with the geometric complexity of the herringbone pattern itself. The brushed grain in alternating left-hand and right-hand herringbone orientations also creates a fine light-and-shadow interplay across the dense 70mm zigzag field in directional light — an optical effect that is unique to the narrow herringbone format and heightens the floor’s visual depth.
Design Guide
AC-21’s smoked olive-brown tone, fine 70mm herringbone geometry, brushed grain texture, and UV lacquer finish place it across a wide range of interior contexts. The smoked olive-brown is one of the most versatile dark floor tones — it reads as sophisticated, warm, and complex without the extreme darkness of very deep smoked or ebonised floors.
Heritage &
Traditional Contemporary
AC-21 is the natural floor for heritage and period-referenced interiors. The 70mm smoked herringbone references historical parquet proportions; the smoked colour adds an antique, aged quality; the ABCD grade character provides the natural variation of old-growth timber. Works with stone walls, warm cream and buff plaster, antique brass hardware, aged leather furniture, and traditional textiles.
Warm Dark
& Atmospheric
AC-21’s olive-brown smoked tone is a natural partner for interior palettes that include deep olive, forest green, or warm navy. The olive undertone of the smoked floor creates a tonal harmony with green-family wall colours that warmer brown or grey floors cannot produce. In a room with deep olive or forest green walls and smoked olive-brown herringbone, the floor and walls read as part of a unified dark, organic palette.
Warm Contemporary
& Bold Contrast
Against warm white, pale linen, or warm stone walls, AC-21’s smoked olive-brown creates a rich dark floor that grounds a pale, layered interior with warmth and material depth. The fine 70mm herringbone adds pattern complexity to the floor that a long-plank dark floor cannot provide. The contrast between the pale walls and the dark patterned floor is visually powerful and deeply contemporary.
T&G Installation — T&G Glue-Down Herringbone
T&G Glue-Down Installation
AC-21 requires full-spread flexible adhesive glue-down installation. At 70mm width, precise board alignment during installation is critical — any drift in the herringbone layout is quickly amplified across the dense repeat. Installation by a qualified parquet specialist is strongly recommended.
•Adhesive: full-spread flexible adhesive approved for engineered herringbone parquet
•Subfloor flatness: 2mm per 2m maximum
•Subfloor moisture: ≤4% MC (timber) or ≤3.5% CM (concrete)
•Expansion gap: minimum 10mm at all walls and fixed structures
•Acclimatisation: 48 hours at room temperature before installation
•Centre line: establish a precise centre line for herringbone layout
•V-point direction: toward main entrance or primary viewpoint
•Layout: work from centre outward in both directions
•Square edge joints: do not fill or caulk
Parquet specialist: at 70mm, precision is critical — qualified installer essential
Underfloor Heating
AC-21 is compatible with both hydronic and electric UFH. Glue-down installation is the most thermally stable format for narrow herringbone over UFH.
•Maximum surface temperature: 27°C
•Switch off UFH 48 hours before installation
•After installation: 7-day adhesive cure before activating UFH
•Increase gradually: +1–2°C per day to target temperature
•Maintain indoor humidity: 45–60% RH year-round
•UV lacquer more moisture-resistant than wax oil
•Thermal resistance: 0.15 m²K/W maximum
Room Suitability
| Room / Application | Suitability | Notes | |
| Living Rooms (all sizes) | Exceptional | The 70mm fine herringbone is effective at all room scales. In smaller rooms, the fine repeat expands the apparent floor area; in large rooms, the dense geometric field creates a rich material ground plane. The smoked olive-brown tone works with virtually every wall colour palette from pale neutrals to deep saturated colours. | |
| Entrance Halls | Exceptional | A smoked 70mm herringbone entrance hall is one of the most striking and historically rooted floor specifications available in engineered form. The fine V-repeat creates immediate visual impact; the V-point directs the eye; the dark smoked tone sets a sophisticated tone from the entrance. Glue-down is extremely durable in high-traffic hallways. | |
Open Plan Living | Excellent | The fine 70mm herringbone creates a rich, unified geometric ground across an open-plan space. The smoked olive-brown anchors a large floor area with dark warmth. The pattern reads from across the room as a densely textured field that adds character to the full space.
Dining Rooms | Excellent | UV lacquer resists dining spills. The smoked tone conceals marks effectively. The fine herringbone pattern adds significant character and warmth to a dining room. In warm candlelight, the olive-brown shifts toward a deeper, warmer chocolate that is exceptionally beautiful.
Bedrooms | Excellent | Smoked herringbone creates a rich, atmospheric bedroom. The fine 70mm repeat adds texture and pattern without visual busyness. The olive-brown tone creates warmth and depth.
Heritage & Period Properties | Excellent | AC-21 is ideally suited to heritage and period interiors where herringbone parquet is historically appropriate. The 70mm narrow format references historical parquet proportions; the smoked colour adds the aged, antique quality that period interiors demand. Glue-down is the historically correct installation method.
Home Offices | Good | Smoked herringbone creates a distinguished, characterful home office. Use desk chair mat on the UV lacquer surface.
Kitchen (dry zone) | Good with care | UV lacquer resists kitchen spills. Dark tone very forgiving. Suitable for dining and seating zones; prompt spill removal at square-edge joints.
Bathrooms | Not Recommended | Not suitable for persistent moisture exposure.
Care & Maintenance — UV Lacquer on Smoked Brushed Oak Herringbone
| Task | Method | ||
| Daily | Dry sweep or vacuum with a soft brush head across the herringbone pattern. Dark smoked floors show light dust and pet hair readily; regular sweeping is the most important maintenance habit. The brushed grain channels collect fine grit — vacuum along the board grain direction to clean effectively. At 70mm, the high density of board joints also creates many joint lines; sweep across the herringbone pattern to remove debris from joints. | ||
| Weekly | Damp mop with a well-wrung cloth and pH-neutral UV lacquer floor cleaner only. No steam mop. No standard household cleaners. No standing water. Mop across the herringbone pattern direction. The UV lacquer is not affected by normal damp mopping and the smoked colour is fully stable under the lacquer. | ||
| Spills | Wipe immediately with a dry cloth. UV lacquer provides strong resistance to household spills. At 70mm with dense herringbone joints, avoid allowing spills to pool in joint lines — mop up promptly. | ||
Herringbone joints | Do not fill or caulk herringbone joints. The flush square-edge joints are an intentional design feature. At 70mm width there are many more joints per square metre than on wider formats; clean with vacuum soft brush attachment across the pattern direction.
No re-oiling | UV lacquer requires no periodic re-oiling. The smoked colour is locked within the oak fibres and the UV lacquer film. Never apply wax, oil, or maintenance oil to AC-21 — adhesion failure with the UV lacquer will result.
Smoked colour | The smoked colour on AC-21 is stable under UV lacquer and will not lighten or shift over time with normal residential use. UV lacquer protects the smoked colour from UV light exposure that would cause gradual lightening on wax oil smoked surfaces.
Furniture | Felt pads under all furniture legs. Protective mat under desk chairs. At 70mm width, the herringbone joint density means that scratches from furniture drag are more visible across the geometric field than on a long-plank surface.
Never | Steam mop · standing water at joints · wax or oil on UV lacquer · standard household cleaners with ammonia or bleach · abrasive pads · filling herringbone joints.

FAQ
Q1. What is 70mm smoked herringbone engineered flooring?
70mm smoked herringbone engineered flooring is an engineered hardwood floor with a solid European oak wear layer, treated with smoking and brushing, laid in the classic herringbone (point parquet) pattern using 70mm wide boards. At 70mm, the herringbone repeat is fine and dense, producing a richly textured geometric field across the floor that reads like woven fabric rather than individual wide boards. AMUER AC-21 is 70mm × 500mm, 14/3mm total thickness with a 3mm solid European oak wear layer, ABCD natural character grade, brushed and smoked surface treatment, UV lacquer finish, and T&G tongue-and-groove glue-down installation.
Q2. What is the difference between 70mm and 90mm herringbone?
The primary difference is the scale of the herringbone V-repeat. At 70mm (AC-21), the boards are narrow and the V-repeat is fine and densely multiplied across the floor, creating a textile-like geometric field where the pattern is more prominent than the individual boards. At 90mm, the boards are more substantial and clearly visible in the pattern; the herringbone reads as individual wide boards in a geometric arrangement. The 70mm format creates a more intricate, more densely patterned floor that is particularly effective in both smaller rooms (where it expands the apparent floor area) and larger rooms (where the dense field creates a rich material ground plane).
Q3. Why is AC-21 smoked olive-brown rather than chocolate-brown?
AC-21’s distinctive olive-brown tone results from the smoking process reacting with the specific tannin chemistry of ABCD grade European oak. The tannin concentration and composition of ABCD grade oak produces an olive-brown smoked colour when treated with ammonia or smoke, as opposed to the warmer chocolate-brown produced by the higher-tannin DE and DEF grade oak in the DS series. This is not a stain or pigment difference — it is a result of the smoking chemistry working with the specific natural chemistry of the timber grade.
Q4. Can AC-21 be used in a period or heritage property?
Yes — AC-21 is an excellent choice for heritage and period properties. The 70mm herringbone format references historical parquet proportions; the smoked colour replicates the aged, darkened appearance of antique parquet over decades of use; the glue-down T&G installation is the historically correct method for parquet; and the UV lacquer provides a durable, low-maintenance surface that was not available in original historical installations. AC-21 provides the aesthetic of antique smoked herringbone parquet with the practical advantages of engineered construction.
Q5. Can AC-21 be used over underfloor heating?
Yes — AC-21 is compatible with both hydronic and electric UFH, maximum surface temperature 27°C. The glue-down T&G installation is the most thermally stable format for herringbone over UFH. Allow 7 days for adhesive cure before activating UFH. Maintain indoor humidity at 45–60% RH year-round.
Q6. How is a 70mm herringbone installed differently from a wider herringbone?
The installation principles are the same as for all herringbone T&G glue-down formats: full-spread flexible adhesive, centre-line layout, V-point toward the main entrance, expansion gap at all walls. However, at 70mm width, the installation requires higher precision than wider formats. Any drift in the layout is quickly amplified across the dense 70mm repeat: a misalignment that might be barely noticeable on a 120mm board reads more prominently on a 70mm board. Qualified parquet specialists are strongly recommended for AC-21 installation.
Q7. What is the minimum order for AC-21?
The standard minimum order for AMUER AC-21 is 200 m² per SKU from our China factory. Free samples available — email arboren@arboren.com. Dispatched to EU, Australian, and most international addresses within 4-5 business days.
