Live Sawn Oak Wide Plank Engineered Flooring 190mm — Special Grade Brushed UV Lacquer — NC-03
NC-03 is a 190mm wide plank engineered oak floor in Special (S) grade — AMUER's most characterful grading designation — with live sawn cutting method, brushed surface texture, and UV lacquer finish: 14/3mm 3-layer construction with a 3mm solid European oak wear layer, click floating installation.
The Special S grade of NC-03 represents a specification beyond the standard EF grade — accepting the full, unedited natural character of European oak as it comes from the live sawn cut, including features that standard grading systems typically exclude: large open splits and cracks running the board length, dramatic oversized knots, deep black checks, live or waney edges in some boards, and the full spectrum of grain figures that live sawn milling produces. No two NC-03 boards are remotely alike.
Live sawn (also called through-and-through or plain sawn from the full log) is the most primitive and most material-efficient cutting method: the log is simply sawn in parallel slices from one face to the other, without rotating the log between cuts. The result is that boards from the log's centre show flat-sawn grain; boards from the log's shoulder show angled grain with partial figure; and boards from near the log's outer diameter show the dramatic fan-shaped radial grain figure characteristic of quartersawn oak. NC-03 contains all of these in a single floor — a record of an entire oak log's anatomy, sliced and reassembled as a floor.

Full Product Specification
| Specification | NC-03 Detail | |
| Product Code | NC-03 | |
| Species | Top layer European Oak; Poplar core and backing layer | |
| Construction | 3-Layer Engineered Wood Flooring — cross-ply solid timber core for dimensional stability | |
Total Thickness | 14/3mm (14mm total, 3mm wear layer)
Top Layer | 3mm solid European oak — supports 1–2 light sanding cycles
Board Width | 190mm | |
Board Length | 1,900mm | |
Colour | NC-03 Natural Live Sawn Oak — warm amber-honey; the natural colour of European oak in live sawn form includes the full range of heartwood and sapwood tones across the log cross-section: warm golden-amber heartwood, pale cream sapwood in outer boards, and the distinctive silvery-grey medullary ray figure visible in near-quartersawn boards; the UV lacquer seals this colour without modification; the colour reads warmer than standard flat-sawn natural oak because the live sawn cut exposes more heartwood variety across the log depth
Surface Treatment | Brushed — wire or nylon brushes remove soft early-wood fibres to expose late-wood grain lines in tactile relief; on live sawn boards with highly variable grain angles, the brushed texture follows the predominant grain direction but interacts differently with flat-sawn vs quarter-sawn grain, producing a more varied and textural surface than brushed flat-sawn or quartersawn boards alone
Finish | UV Lacquer — hard, clear factory-applied finish; seals and protects the brushed live sawn surface; scratch and stain resistant; easy daily maintenance; no periodic re-oiling; note: open splits, cracks, and checks in the Special grade are sealed and stabilised by the UV lacquer at the factory — the lacquer coat bridges and seals natural openings in the board surface
Grading | S — Special Grade: AMUER's designation for boards beyond the maximum standard character grade (EF); Special grade accepts all natural features of European oak without exclusion: large open splits and checks running along the grain; significant width checks and cracks (may run full board width); oversized open and black knots; live or waney edges (partial natural timber edge profile) in some boards; dramatic grain figure variation from flat-sawn to quartersawn-angle within the same floor; full heartwood-to-sapwood and colour variation; no two boards identical; this is the most natural, least-edited, and most individually characterful grading available
Edge Profile | Square Edge — flush board-to-board joint; the natural variation of live sawn boards means the floor reads as richly textured and visually varied even without an additional edge treatment
Installation | Click floating (Uniclic-compatible) — no adhesive; suitable for concrete screed, existing tiles, timber subfloor; expansion gap minimum 12mm at all walls (190mm wide plank); 48–72 hour acclimatisation required
Underfloor Heating | Compatible — maximum surface temperature 27°C; maintain 45–60% RH year-round; UV lacquer stable under heating cycles

PRODUCT OVERVIEW · NC-03 LIVE SAWN SPECIAL GRADE
The Most Characterful Oak in the AMUER Range — Special S Grade Live Sawn, 190mm, UV Lacquer
NC-03 sits at the absolute apex of natural oak character in the AMUER range. It is not simply a higher character grade than NC-01 (DE grade) or AM-02 (EF grade natural oil) — it is a categorically different kind of floor, produced by a different cutting method (live sawn) and graded to a specification (Special S) that accepts features no standard grading system permits.
The standard character grading hierarchy in the AMUER range — AB, CD, DE, EF — all refer to flat-sawn or quartersawn boards where the cut angle is controlled and the grain figure is therefore relatively consistent within each grade level. NC-03's Special S grade breaks this hierarchy: these are live sawn boards where every board shows a different grain figure depending on its position in the log cross-section, and where the grading acceptance criteria include large open splits, deep checks, oversized knots, and live-edge profiles that are excluded from even EF grade.
The result is a floor that is genuinely unlike any other product in the collection: at 190mm wide and 1,900mm long, each NC-03 board is a generous canvas of natural oak anatomy at its most unedited — some boards with dramatic fan-shaped quartersawn grain spanning the full 190mm width; some with the bold cathedral arches of flat-sawn grain; some with open splits and cracks sealed under UV lacquer; some with large open or black knots; some with the distinctive silver-grey medullary ray figure that only quartersawn cutting reveals; and some showing the gradual transition between all of these within a single board's length. The floor that results from assembling NC-03 boards is the closest achievable to a genuinely reclaimed antique floor character in a modern engineered hardwood product — genuinely individual, genuinely material-authentic, genuinely unlike anything produced by conventional graded cutting.
Design Guide
NC-03's live sawn special grade character, warm amber-honey colour with medullary ray accents, and extreme natural variation make it the specification for projects where material authenticity and natural individuality are paramount:
Period Property & Reclaimed-Look
NC-03 is the closest achievable equivalent to genuinely antique reclaimed oak in a modern engineered product. For period property renovation, stone-floored farmhouses converted to residential use, and heritage projects where an authentic, aged floor character is non-negotiable, NC-03's live sawn Special grade delivers what no standard character-grade product can.
Artisan & Raw Contemporary
For design-led contemporary projects built around raw, authentic, unprocessed material — exposed concrete, raw steel, natural plaster, and reclaimed timber — NC-03's live sawn special grade provides the floor element that matches this material honesty. No other engineered oak product in the range achieves this level of material rawness.
Grand Farmhouse & Country Estate
In grand farmhouse and country estate interiors — rooms with high ceilings, stone fireplaces, exposed beams, and traditional joinery — NC-03's live sawn character reads as an authentic, materially generous floor that could only come from oak as it naturally grows. The floor completes the interior rather than merely furnishing it.
Installation & Room Suitability
Click Installation (Floating)
NC-03 uses Uniclic-compatible click floating installation. Special S grade wide plank boards require additional care in installation planning due to the natural variation in board dimensions and profiles.
· Subfloor flatness: 3mm per 2m maximum — important for 190mm wide planks
· Expansion gap: minimum 12mm at all walls
· Acclimatise 48–72 hours at room temperature before installation
· Pre-sort boards: lay out NC-03 boards in the planned installation order before committing — the live sawn variation means pre-sorting for colour and figure distribution produces a better aesthetic result than random placement
· Open splits, checks, and cracks are pre-sealed by the factory UV lacquer coat — do not attempt to fill or seal them further on site
· Stagger end joints: minimum 400mm between adjacent rows
Underfloor Heating
NC-03 is compatible with both hydronic and electric underfloor heating with consistent humidity management.
· Maximum surface temperature: 27°C
· Switch off heating 48–72 hours before installation
· Restart: increase 1–2°C per day to target temperature
· Maintain indoor humidity 45–60% RH year-round
· The live sawn special grade character features (splits, checks) are stable under normal UFH conditions if humidity is maintained correctly
· UV lacquer is stable under heating cycles
· Thermal resistance: 0.15 m²K/W maximum
Room Suitability
| Room / Application | Suitability | Notes | |
| Period Property & Heritage Renovation | Exceptional | NC-03's live sawn Special grade character — open splits, dramatic grain figures, medullary ray — produces a floor closer to genuinely antique reclaimed oak than any other engineered hardwood product in the AMUER range. Correct and appropriate for significant period property renovation where authentic floor character is the brief. | |
| Artisan & Design-Led Residential | Exceptional | For design-led residential projects that prize individual, unedited natural material — where the floor is intended as a statement of material authenticity rather than a neutral background — NC-03's extraordinary natural variation makes it the most individually distinctive product in the range. | |
Grand Living Rooms & Reception Rooms | Excellent | At 190mm wide and 1,900mm long, NC-03's live sawn boards create an exceptional floor in grand living rooms and reception rooms where the scale and character can be fully appreciated.
Farmhouse & Country Heritage | Excellent | NC-03's raw, unedited natural character is perfectly suited to farmhouse and country heritage interiors seeking the most authentic possible timber floor character.
Restaurants & Design-Led Hospitality | Very Good | For rustic-concept restaurants, boutique hotels, and artisan-brand hospitality seeking a floor of genuine material character and individuality, NC-03's UV lacquer durability supports commercial use while delivering exceptional natural character.
Bedrooms & Studies | Good | NC-03 creates a warm, characterful bedroom or study floor. The extreme natural variation reads well in smaller room contexts where individual boards can be appreciated at close range.
Smaller Apartments / High-Uniformity Contexts | Not Recommended | NC-03's extreme natural variation is not appropriate for contexts where floor colour and character consistency is required. For clients who want natural oak with DE or EF character but consistent appearance, specify NC-01 or AM-02 instead.
Bathrooms / Wet Areas | Not Recommended | Not suitable for wet environments.
Care & Maintenance — Live Sawn Special Grade UV Lacquer
| Task | Method | ||
| Daily | Dry sweep or vacuum with soft brush head along the board length (with grain). The live sawn grain variation means grain direction changes across different boards — always sweep lengthwise along each board rather than across multiple boards at different angles. | ||
| Weekly | Damp mop with well-wrung cloth and pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner. UV lacquer is fully sealed — the natural colour and open splits/checks are protected by the lacquer coat. No steam mop, no standing water. | ||
Spills | Wipe immediately with a dry cloth. UV lacquer resists household liquids effectively. Prompt wiping prevents any penetration at the edges of open knots or splits where the lacquer seal may be thinner.
Open splits & checks | The open splits, checks, and cracks of the Special grade are sealed by the factory UV lacquer application. Vacuum with a soft brush attachment along the split direction to remove accumulated dust. Do not attempt to fill open splits with caulk or filler — they are a natural feature of the Special grade character, sealed and stable as delivered.
Medullary ray figure | The silver-grey medullary ray figure visible in quartersawn-angle boards within NC-03 is a surface-level optical effect produced by the grain's reflective anatomy — it is not a treatment or coating. It cannot be removed and does not require special maintenance.
Periodic maintenance | UV lacquer requires no periodic re-oiling. Buff with manufacturer-approved hardwood floor polish every 6–12 months.
Furniture | Felt pads under all furniture legs. Protective mat under desk chairs. The natural colour range of EF grade means that scratches are less visually uniform than on a single-tone floor, but felt protection is still essential.
Scratches | Minor surface scratches: manufacturer-matched UV lacquer repair pen in warm honey-oak tone. For scratches into or near open splits: professional spot repair. The natural character features of NC-03 (open splits, checks, knots) are not addressable by standard lacquer scratch repair — these features are inherent to the Special grade.
Never | Steam mop · standing water · bleach or acid cleaners · abrasive pads · oil or wax products on lacquered surface · silicone polishes · attempting to fill open splits and cracks with standard caulk.

FAQ
Q1. What is live sawn oak engineered flooring?
Live sawn (also through-and-through) engineered oak flooring uses boards cut by passing the full log through the saw in sequential parallel slices without rotating the log between cuts. This produces boards with a variety of grain figures — flat-sawn (cathedral arches) in centre boards, increasingly angled grain in mid-log boards, and quartersawn-angle fan figures with medullary ray (silver grain) in outer boards — all within the same floor. NC-03 combines live sawn boards with a Special S grade that accepts the full natural character of this cut, including open splits, cracks, and oversized knots, finished with brushed surface and UV lacquer.
Q2. What is Special S grade, and how is it different from EF grade?
EF grade is the highest standard character grade in the AMUER range, accepting the maximum knot density and natural variation within the limits of conventional flat-sawn or quartersawn boards. Special S grade goes beyond EF: it is graded to a specification that accepts features no standard grade permits, including large open splits and cracks running the board length, live or waney edges in some boards, oversized open knots, and the full grain variation produced by the live sawn cutting method across all positions in the log cross-section. Every board in NC-03 Special S grade is fully individual — the most unedited, most natural oak floor in the AMUER range.
Q3. Are the open splits and cracks in NC-03 structurally safe?
Yes — the open splits, checks, and cracks in NC-03's Special grade boards are natural wood features produced by the drying process and grain tension in live sawn timber. They are structurally stable under normal indoor conditions and are sealed and stabilised by the factory UV lacquer application. The lacquer bridges and seals natural openings in the board surface, preventing further movement or water ingress under normal residential conditions. These features are not quality defects — they are defining natural characteristics of Special grade live sawn oak, intentionally included as part of the product's character.
Q4. What is the medullary ray figure visible in some NC-03 boards?
Medullary rays are cellular structures that grow perpendicular to the growth rings in oak, transporting nutrients radially across the log. In standard flat-sawn boards, medullary rays appear as fine lines running with the grain. In quartersawn or quartersawn-angle boards — which are produced naturally by the live sawn cut at certain positions in the log cross-section — the saw cuts across these rays, exposing them as broad, lustrous, silvery-grey panels or flames across the board face. This medullary ray figure, also called silver grain or silky oak figure, is a prized natural feature of quartersawn oak and one of the unique visual qualities that live sawn boards make possible within a single floor installation.
Q5. Should I pre-sort NC-03 boards before installation?
Yes — we strongly recommend pre-sorting NC-03 boards by laying them out in the planned installation area before applying adhesive or clicking together, to distribute the full range of live sawn figures (flat-sawn, quartersawn, highly figured, pale sapwood, dark heartwood) across the floor in a visually pleasing composition. This allows the installer and client to plan which boards go where — for example, balancing pale sapwood boards with warm heartwood boards, or spacing the most dramatically figured quartersawn boards across the full room rather than clustering them in one area.
Q6. Can NC-03 be used with underfloor heating?
Yes — NC-03 is compatible with both hydronic and electric underfloor heating with consistent humidity management. Maximum surface temperature 27°C. Maintain indoor humidity 45–60% RH year-round — this is especially important for NC-03's live sawn Special grade, as the natural features (open splits, checks) are stable under consistent humidity but can show increased movement if humidity varies significantly. Switch off heating 48–72 hours before installation; restart gradually at 1–2°C per day.
Q7. What is the minimum order for NC-03?
