Narrow Herringbone Oak Engineered Flooring 70mm — ABC Grade Brushed UV Lacquer — AM-14
Narrow Herringbone Oak Engineered Flooring 70mm — ABC Grade Brushed UV Lacquer — AM-14
AM-14 is a 70×500mm herringbone engineered oak floor in ABC natural character grade with a brushed surface and UV lacquer finish: 14/3mm 3-layer construction with a 3mm solid European oak wear layer, tongue-and-groove (T&G) glue-down or nail-down installation.
The defining specification of AM-14 is its stave width: 70mm. This places AM-14 in the narrow herringbone category — significantly more slender than the 90mm staves used in AM-23, AC-10, and AC-11, and approaching the proportions of authentic reclaimed antique solid oak parquet blocks that were the historical standard for European herringbone floors from the 18th century onward. At 70mm wide, the herringbone pattern produces a finer, denser, more classically proportioned zigzag rhythm: the repeating diagonal unit is smaller and more tightly packed, creating a more formally elegant, more historically correct herringbone than wider modern stave formats.
The ABC grade delivers a clean, warm honey-sand oak colour with natural character — more individual and visually alive than the clean AB select, but without the open knots and checks of CD or higher grades — making AM-14 a floor that reads as naturally warm, gently characterful, and formally refined simultaneously. UV lacquer provides practical, low-maintenance protection appropriate for everyday use.

3mm solid European oak — supports 1–2 light sanding cycles
Stave Dimensions
70mm wide × 500mm long — the key specification: 70mm is a narrow herringbone stave, producing a finer, more classically proportioned zigzag pattern than the standard 90mm width; the 1:7.14 width-to-length ratio creates a well-proportioned narrow herringbone with elegant, dense diagonal rhythm
Pattern
Herringbone — square-cut stave ends; alternating 90° zigzag; broken staggered joint creating the classic diagonal pattern; at 70mm width, the herringbone formation is noticeably finer, more compact, and more historically proportioned than 90mm herringbone — closer to the scale of authentic antique European parquet
Colour
AM-14 Honey-Sand Oak — warm, pale golden-cream; ABC grade colour range spans clean, consistent honey-gold heartwood at the AB end of the spectrum to boards with light natural grain variation and occasional small tight knots at the C end; the ABC grade gives AM-14 a natural warmth and individuality above AB select, while remaining clean and refined enough for the formal, classical proportions of the narrow 70mm herringbone
Surface Treatment
Brushed — wire or nylon brushes remove soft early-wood fibres to expose the harder late-wood grain lines in tactile relief; at 70mm stave width, the brushed grain runs along the narrow stave length, producing fine, closely-spaced grain lines that add texture and depth at the correct scale for the narrow herringbone format
Finish
UV Lacquer — hard, clear factory-applied finish; seals and protects the brushed ABC grade surface; scratch and stain resistant; easy daily maintenance; no periodic re-oiling required
Grading
ABC — Select to Natural Character Grade: tight or absent knots at the AB end; small tight knots and light natural grain movement at the C end; minimal open grain variation; low to minimal sapwood content; consistent warm honey-gold heartwood with gentle natural variation; ABC grade is appropriate for AM-14's narrow herringbone format where a degree of natural warmth and character is desired within a generally clean, refined floor
Edge Profile
Square Edge — flush stave-to-stave joint within the herringbone formation; at 70mm narrow stave, the square edge reads as precise and formally correct
Installation
T&G (Tongue-and-Groove) — glue-down (recommended) or nail-down (timber subfloor only); floating not recommended for herringbone T&G; full-spread flexible adhesive
Underfloor Heating
Compatible — maximum surface temperature 27°C; maintain 45–60% RH year-round; flexible polyurethane adhesive for UFH; UV lacquer stable under heating cycles

PRODUCT OVERVIEW · AM-14 70mm NARROW HERRINGBONE

The Classical Narrow Pitch — Why 70mm Herringbone Is Different from 90mm

The single most significant specification decision in AM-14 is the stave width: 70mm. This seemingly small difference from the 90mm staves of other AMUER herringbone products (AM-23, AC-10, AC-11) produces a meaningfully different floor at the installed room scale.
Historically, European herringbone parquet was cut from solid oak blocks averaging 60–80mm wide — the width range that allowed individual blocks to be cut from the timber available in the pre-industrial era of steam-powered sawmilling, and the width that produces the herringbone's characteristic dense, rhythmic zigzag at correct visual scale for room-sized installations. AM-14's 70mm stave sits at the centre of this historical range, producing a herringbone pattern that is more accurate to the proportions of genuine antique European parquet floors than the wider staves used in most contemporary engineered herringbone products.
At room scale, the difference is clearly visible: a 70mm herringbone produces approximately 30% more zigzag pattern repeats per metre than a 90mm herringbone, creating a denser, more finely detailed diagonal texture. This finer pitch reads as more classically proportioned, more formally elegant, and — in larger rooms — more historically correct than the bolder, more contemporary scale of wider herringbone staves.
The ABC grade complements the narrow format: the clean, warm honey-sand of ABC oak provides enough natural character to warm the refined narrow geometry without the strong character variation of CD or higher grades that might compete visually with the fine-pitch pattern. The UV lacquer finish provides the practicality to make this classical proportioned floor a comfortable everyday living surface.
Narrow Herringbone Oak Engineered Flooring 70mm — ABC Grade Brushed UV Lacquer
Design Guide
AM-14's narrow 70mm pitch, warm ABC grade honey-sand colour, and UV lacquer practicality make it the natural specification for formally elegant, period-referenced, or refined contemporary interiors:
French Classical & Period Property
The 70mm herringbone is historically correct for French classical interiors — Parisian apartments, provincial châteaux, and Georgian properties. AM-14's fine-pitch ABC grade floor reads as period-appropriate and historically authentic, providing the formal elegance these interiors demand.
Japandi & Refined Minimalist
In Japandi and refined minimalist interiors, AM-14's fine-pitch herringbone creates a floor that reads as a quietly refined geometric ground — the pattern is clearly present but recedes enough not to compete with the deliberate material quietness of the overall interior. The warm ABC honey-sand complements natural linen, pale oak, and rattan.
Contemporary Warm & Transitional
For contemporary warm and transitional residential interiors where a herringbone floor is desired but the client wants something more refined and classical than the bold 90mm standard formats, AM-14's 70mm pitch provides the herringbone geometric interest at a more subtle, formally elegant scale.
T&G Installation
Narrow Herringbone T&G Glue-Down — Layout Precision
AM-14's 70mm narrow herringbone requires more precise layout than wider herringbone formats. The finer pattern pitch means that any misalignment in the spine line is more visually apparent at room scale.

· Subfloor flatness: 3mm per 2m maximum
· Adhesive: flexible polyurethane or MS polymer; full-spread trowel across stave back
· Spine line: snap a precise chalk line at 45° to the room walls from the chosen centre or starting point; accuracy is more critical at 70mm than at 90mm — measure twice
· Dry-lay 15–20 staves along the spine line before adhesive to confirm alignment and pattern direction
· Expansion gap: 10mm minimum at all walls
· Acclimatise 48 hours before installation
· Adhesive cure: 48 hours before foot traffic
Underfloor Heating
AM-14 is compatible with both hydronic and electric UFH with T&G glue-down installation.

· Maximum surface temperature: 27°C
· Use flexible polyurethane adhesive compatible with UFH
· Switch off heating 48 hours before installation
· Restart: increase 1–2°C per day to target temperature
· Maintain 45–60% RH year-round
· UV lacquer is stable under UFH heating cycles
· Thermal resistance: 0.15 m²K/W maximum

Notes
Grand Living Rooms & Formal Reception Rooms
Exceptional
AM-14's fine-pitch 70mm herringbone is at its most powerful in large formal rooms where the dense, classically proportioned zigzag can develop its full visual texture across a generous floor area. The floor reads as a refined, formally elegant ground — appropriate for rooms of significant scale and traditional character.
Period Property & French Classical Interiors
Exceptional
The 70mm stave width is historically correct for the period parquet floors of French châteaux, Georgian town houses, and Victorian reception rooms — where authentic narrow-block herringbone is the floor most closely associated with the period's architectural character. AM-14 brings this historical proportion to a modern engineered hardwood.
Japandi & Contemporary Warm Interiors
Excellent
The fine-pitch herringbone of AM-14 reads as refined and contemporary in Japandi and warm contemporary interiors: the dense diagonal texture creates visual interest at a scale that recedes into a quiet ground rather than demanding attention — appropriate for interiors where restraint is the aesthetic value.
Entrance Halls & Landings
Excellent
The 70mm narrow herringbone is classical for entrance halls and landings. The fine pitch creates a visually rich but formally appropriate floor for the most significant entry points of period and traditional properties.
Bedrooms
Good
The fine-pitch herringbone creates a calm, gently characterful bedroom floor. UV lacquer is low-maintenance for bedroom use.
Dining Rooms
Excellent
Narrow herringbone creates a formally refined dining room floor. UV lacquer is practical for dining use; the ABC grade warmth is compatible with traditional and contemporary dining environments.
Smaller Rooms
Good — with consideration
In smaller rooms (under 15 m²), the fine pitch of 70mm herringbone may read as very dense — consider whether the pattern will develop sufficiently in the available floor area before specifying. 90mm herringbone may be more appropriate for compact spaces.
Bathrooms
Not Recommended
Not suitable for persistent moisture exposure.
Care & Maintenance — Narrow Herringbone UV Lacquer
Task
Method
Daily
Dry sweep or vacuum with soft brush head. For AM-14's 70mm narrow herringbone, sweep diagonally along the stave direction (45° to room walls) to move debris efficiently along the fine-pitch joints. The narrow stave format has more joint length per square metre than wider herringbone — regular sweeping is the most important maintenance step.
Weekly
Damp mop with well-wrung cloth and pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner. UV lacquer is fully sealed — no risk to the brushed oak surface or ABC grade colour. No steam mop, no standing water.
Spills
Wipe immediately with a dry cloth. UV lacquer resists household liquids effectively. The fine-pitch joint density of AM-14 makes prompt spill response particularly important.
Joint care
The 70mm narrow herringbone has approximately 30% more joint length per square metre than 90mm herringbone. Vacuum along joint lines periodically with a soft brush attachment to keep the fine-pitch pattern clean and sharp.
Periodic maintenance
UV lacquer requires no periodic re-oiling. Buff with manufacturer-approved hardwood floor polish every 6–12 months.
Scratches
Minor surface scratches: manufacturer-matched UV lacquer repair pen in honey-oak tone. Deep scratches: professional sanding and lacquer recoating.
Never
Steam mop · standing water · bleach or acid cleaners · abrasive scrubbers · oil or wax products on lacquered surface · silicone-based polishes · dragging heavy furniture across herringbone joints.

FAQ
Q1.   What is narrow herringbone engineered oak flooring?
AM-14 is a 70×500mm herringbone engineered oak floor with a brushed surface and UV lacquer finish, in ABC select-to-natural character grade, 14/3mm 3-layer construction with a 3mm solid oak wear layer, T&G installation. The 70mm stave width makes AM-14 a narrow herringbone — significantly finer in pitch than the standard 90mm staves used in most contemporary engineered herringbone products. This narrower width produces a more classically proportioned, more densely patterned herringbone closer to the historical European parquet block dimensions of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Q2.   How is 70mm herringbone different from 90mm herringbone?
The 70mm stave produces a herringbone pattern with approximately 30% more zigzag repeats per metre than a 90mm stave at the same floor scale. At room scale, this reads as a finer, more compact, more classically proportioned diagonal texture — the individual staves are narrower, the zigzag units are smaller, and the overall pattern density is higher. The 90mm format reads as bolder and more contemporary; the 70mm format reads as more refined, more formally elegant, and more historically correct for period property applications.
Q3.  What does ABC grade mean for AM-14?
ABC grade (Select to Natural Character Grade) covers a range from AB-quality boards at the clean end — consistent warm honey-gold heartwood with minimal knots — to C-quality boards at the natural character end — small tight knots and gentle grain movement visible. The ABC range in AM-14 produces a floor that is warmer and more individually characterful than AB select, but cleaner and more refined than CD grade. This makes it well-suited to the narrow 70mm herringbone format where strong character variation could compete visually with the fine-pitch pattern geometry.
Q4.  Is 70mm herringbone suitable for smaller rooms?
In rooms smaller than approximately 15 m², the 70mm fine-pitch herringbone may read as very dense and complex, as the pattern may not have sufficient floor area to develop its full visual rhythm comfortably. For compact rooms, 90mm herringbone (AM-23, AC-10, AC-11) may produce a more balanced scale relationship. AM-14's 70mm pitch is at its best in larger rooms (20 m²+) where the fine-pitch pattern develops fully and the classical proportions read correctly at room scale.
Q5.  Can AM-14 be installed over underfloor heating?
Yes — AM-14 is compatible with both hydronic and electric underfloor heating with T&G glue-down installation using flexible polyurethane adhesive. Maximum surface temperature 27°C. Maintain indoor humidity 45–60% RH year-round. Switch off heating 48 hours before installation; restart gradually at 1–2°C per day.
Q6.  How does narrow herringbone T&G installation differ from wider formats?
The primary difference is spine line precision: at 70mm stave width, any misalignment in the initial spine line is more visually apparent at room scale than with wider formats, because the finer pitch means more pattern repeats cross the room, amplifying the cumulative effect of any angular error. Snap a precise chalk line at 45° to the room walls from the chosen centre point, and dry-lay 15–20 staves before beginning adhesive application to confirm alignment. Otherwise, the installation method is the same as standard herringbone T&G glue-down.
Q7.  What is the minimum order for AM-14 herringbone?
Standard MOQ is 200 m² per SKU from our China factory. Free samples available — email arboren@arboren.com. Samples dispatched within 4-5 business days. OEM orders from 200 m² MOQ.
