Saw Mark Smoked Oak Engineered Flooring 150mm — DEF Grade UV Lacquer — DS-03
Saw Mark Smoked Oak Engineered Flooring 150mm — DEF Grade UV Lacquer — DS-03
DS-03 is a 150mm long plank engineered oak floor in DEF maximum character grade with saw mark surface texture, deep smoke treatment, and UV lacquer finish: 14/3mm 3-layer construction with a 3mm solid European oak wear layer, click floating installation. Saw mark texture is a surface treatment that replicates the fine, parallel ridged texture left by traditional sash-saw or pit-saw milling — the surface marking method used to convert solid timber before the era of rotary planing — applied here as a deliberate decorative treatment rather than an incidental milling artefact.
In combination with deep smoke treatment, DS-03 produces a floor of genuinely rustic, hand-crafted character: the saw mark ridges create fine horizontal shadow lines across each board's full length, while the deep smoke treatment darkens the oak to an intense chocolate-brown that amplifies these shadow lines into a more pronounced textural relief than smoking alone would produce on a brushed or smooth surface. DEF grade — the maximum natural character grade in the AMUER range — completes the rustic specification with full natural knots, figure, and grain movement. The UV lacquer finish seals this combination of saw mark texture and deep smoked colour under a hard, durable, low-maintenance protective coat.

Colour
DS-03 Deep Smoked Oak — intense chocolate-brown; the deep smoke treatment (ammonia fuming) penetrates the full 3mm oak wear layer, chemically darkening the natural tannins in the oak to a rich, deep brown that is part of the wood itself rather than a surface coating; the saw mark ridges interact with this smoked colour to create fine tonal variation across the board — raised ridge crests catch light and read marginally lighter, recessed saw mark valleys hold shadow and read deeper and darker; DEF grade knots, checks, and figure add further colour and tonal complexity within the smoked field
Surface Treatment
Saw Mark + Deep Smoked — two combined treatments: (1) Saw Mark: a mechanically applied surface texture that replicates the fine, closely-spaced parallel ridge marks of traditional sash-saw or pit-saw milling, running perpendicular to the board's length across the full board width; this texture is more linear, regular, and finer in scale than embossment or brushing, producing a distinctive hand-sawn, artisan-milled appearance; (2) Deep Smoked: ammonia fuming that permanently darkens the oak tannins to an intense chocolate-brown, applied after the saw mark texture is cut so that the smoked colour follows and emphasises the saw mark ridge-and-valley relief
Finish
UV Lacquer — hard, clear factory-applied finish; seals and protects the saw mark texture and deep smoked colour; scratch and stain resistant; easy daily maintenance; no periodic re-oiling required; the UV lacquer settles into the fine saw mark grooves, producing a surface where the lacquer sheen catches differently along the ridges versus the valleys — adding further visual depth to the textured surface
Grading
DEF — Maximum Natural Character Grade: open and filled knots, pronounced annual ring contrast, strong grain movement and figure, full heartwood-to-sapwood colour variation; the highest character grade available in the AMUER range; in combination with the saw mark texture and smoked colour, DEF grade produces the most rustic, maximally characterful floor specification available — every board distinctly individual, displaying the full natural anatomy of European oak overlaid with deliberate hand-crafted surface texture
Edge Profile
Square Edge — flush board-to-board joint; the saw mark texture runs to the board edge, creating a consistent textured surface across the full installed floor

Maximum Rustic Character — Saw Mark Texture, Deep Smoke, DEF Grade, UV Lacquer

DS-03 is the most deliberately rustic, hand-crafted-feeling specification in the AMUER smoked oak range — a combination of three character-maximising decisions, each compounding the others toward a single outcome: a floor that reads as genuinely artisan-milled, naturally aged, and deeply individual.

The saw mark texture is the foundation of this character. Before the widespread adoption of rotary planing in the 19th century, timber conversion was done by sash-saws or pit-saws, which left a distinctive pattern of fine, regular parallel ridges across the cut surface of the board — visible evidence of the manual milling process. DS-03's saw mark surface treatment deliberately replicates this historical texture: a fine, linear, closely-spaced ridge pattern running across the board width, distinct from the broader, more irregular relief of embossment and the longitudinal grain-following texture of brushing. The result is a surface that reads as genuinely historical and hand-milled — the texture of old reclaimed flooring rather than a contemporary surface treatment.
The deep smoke treatment amplifies this saw mark texture rather than simply adding colour. Because the smoke treatment is applied after the saw mark texture is cut, the ammonia fuming reaction interacts with the ridge-and-valley relief of the saw marks — the differential exposure and tannin reaction across the textured surface produces subtle tonal variation that follows the saw mark pattern, deepening the apparent texture and adding a sense of age and weathering that a flat smoked surface cannot achieve.
The DEF grade — the maximum character grade in the AMUER range — completes the specification: open knots, pronounced grain movement, full colour variation, and natural figure throughout. Combined with the saw mark texture and deep smoked colour, DEF grade produces a floor of maximum natural and surface character simultaneously — the most rustic, individually distinctive product in the entire AMUER collection.
Design Guide
DS-03's saw mark hand-sawn texture, intense smoked chocolate-brown colour, and DEF maximum character place it firmly in industrial-rustic, reclaimed-look, and design-led dark contemporary interior contexts:
Industrial-Rustic & Loft Conversion
DS-03's saw mark texture and deep smoked colour are the defining floor for industrial-rustic loft conversions and warehouse residential conversions: exposed brick walls, raw structural steel, reclaimed timber furniture, and weathered metal fixtures. The hand-sawn texture provides the material authenticity these spaces require.
Farmhouse-Industrial & Reclaimed-Look
For farmhouse-industrial and reclaimed-look interiors seeking an authentic aged wood floor character without genuine reclaimed timber supply challenges, DS-03 delivers the visual texture of antique hand-sawn flooring with engineered hardwood consistency and modern performance.
Design-Led Dark Contemporary
For contemporary interiors built around a dark, deeply textured floor as the primary material statement, DS-03 provides a floor of exceptional surface and natural character — restaurants, design studios, and contemporary spaces referencing artisan and industrial heritage.

Care & Maintenance — Saw Mark Smoked Oak UV Lacquer
Task
Method
Daily
Dry sweep or vacuum with soft brush head. The saw mark grooves run across the board width and can collect fine dust and debris more readily than a smooth or lengthwise-brushed surface. Vacuum in multiple directions to clear both along and across the saw mark texture. The deep smoked colour shows dust and pet hair clearly — daily sweeping is the most important maintenance step.
Weekly
Damp mop with well-wrung cloth and pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner. UV lacquer is fully sealed — the saw mark texture and smoked colour are protected. No steam mop, no excessive water.
Spills
Wipe immediately with a dry cloth. UV lacquer resists household liquids effectively. The saw mark grooves can hold liquid longer than a flat surface — prompt wiping prevents pooling in the texture.
Saw mark grooves
Vacuum with soft brush attachment across the saw mark direction periodically to clear fine debris from the texture grooves. The fine, regular ridge pattern is more prone to dust accumulation than brushed or smooth surfaces and benefits from slightly more frequent attention.
Periodic maintenance
UV lacquer requires no periodic re-oiling. Buff with manufacturer-approved hardwood floor polish every 6–12 months to restore surface protection.
Scratches
Minor surface scratches: manufacturer-matched dark lacquer repair pen. Deep scratches: professional sanding and lacquer recoating — note that resanding may reduce the saw mark texture depth; consult AMUER or a flooring professional for guidance on preserving the texture during refinishing.
Never
Steam mop · standing water · bleach or acid cleaners · standard household cleaners · abrasive pads · oil or wax products on lacquered surface · silicone-based polishes.

FAQ
Q1.  What is saw mark texture on engineered oak flooring?
Saw mark texture is a surface treatment that replicates the fine, closely-spaced parallel ridge marks left by traditional sash-saw or pit-saw milling — the timber conversion method used before rotary planing became standard. On DS-03, this texture is applied mechanically across the board width (perpendicular to the board's length), producing a regular, linear ridge pattern distinct from the lengthwise texture of brushing or the broader relief of embossment. Combined with deep smoke treatment, the saw mark texture creates a floor that reads as genuinely hand-milled and historically authentic.
Q2.   How is saw mark texture different from brushed or embossed surfaces?
Saw mark texture runs perpendicular to the board's length (across the width), in fine, regular, closely-spaced ridges, replicating historical sash-saw milling. Brushed surfaces (used on DS-01 and most AMUER products) run lengthwise along the grain direction, created by removing soft early-wood fibres to expose late-wood grain in relief. Embossed surfaces (used on AH-07, AW-07) are mechanically pressed with a textured roller, typically following grain-like patterns but stamped rather than derived from the wood's natural fibre structure. Each produces a distinct visual and tactile character — saw mark is the most historically specific and artisan-referential of the three.
Q3.  Can DS-03 be sanded and refinished?
DS-03 has a 3mm solid European oak wear layer, supporting limited light sanding for minor repairs. However, because both the saw mark texture and the deep smoked colour are concentrated near the board surface, full sanding will significantly reduce or remove the saw mark texture and may reduce the depth of the smoked colour. For minor surface scratches and localised repair, professional spot treatment with a matched lacquer pen is preferable to full sanding. For more significant refinishing needs, contact AMUER or a specialist flooring professional for guidance on preserving the saw mark texture during the refinishing process.
Q4.  Will the deep smoked colour of DS-03 fade over time?
The smoked colour of DS-03 is a permanent chemical change in the oak tannins produced by ammonia fuming, not a surface coating, and will not fade or wash out under normal use and UV lacquer protection. The colour is consistent with DS-01's deep smoke treatment but reads with additional tonal complexity due to the interaction between the smoke treatment and the saw mark texture's ridge-and-valley surface relief. The UV lacquer coat provides UV resistance that protects the smoked colour from light-induced change.
Q5.  Can DS-03 be used over underfloor heating?
Yes — DS-03 3-layer engineered construction is compatible with both hydronic and electric underfloor heating. Maximum surface temperature 27°C. UV lacquer is stable under heating cycles. Maintain indoor humidity 45–60% RH year-round. Switch off heating 48 hours before installation; restart gradually at 1–2°C per day.
Q6.  How do you clean saw mark textured flooring?
Saw mark textured flooring requires slightly more attentive cleaning than smooth or lengthwise-brushed surfaces, because the fine cross-grain ridge grooves can collect dust and debris more readily. Vacuum in multiple directions — both along and across the saw mark texture — to clear debris fully from the grooves. Weekly damp mopping with pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner and a well-wrung cloth. No periodic re-oiling required (UV lacquer). The deep smoked dark colour shows dust clearly, making daily sweeping the single most important maintenance step for DS-03.
Q7.   What is the minimum order for DS-03?
Standard MOQ is 200 m² per SKU from our China factory. Free samples available — email arboren@arboren.com. Samples dispatched within 4-5 business days. OEM orders based on DS-03 specification available from 200 m² MOQ.
