Black Herringbone Oak Engineered Flooring Saw Mark UV Lacquer — AM-20
AM-20 is a 90×600mm herringbone engineered oak floor in AB select grade with saw mark surface texture and a deep near-black colour treatment, finished with UV lacquer: 14/3mm 3-layer construction with a 3mm solid European oak wear layer, tongue-and-groove (T&G) glue-down or nail-down installation.
AM-20 is the most dramatically dark, most design-statement-driven specification in the AMUER herringbone range — a near-black deep slate-green colour combined with the historically-referenced saw mark surface texture and the bold herringbone geometric pattern. The three elements work together: the saw mark's horizontal ridge-and-valley texture creates micro-light variation across the near-black surface, preventing the extreme dark colour from reading as flat or monolithic; the AB select grade ensures a clean, consistent surface where the saw mark texture and dark colour read with maximum clarity, without character variation competing for attention; and the herringbone geometry adds a strong diagonal structural rhythm across the deeply dark floor.
The result is a floor at the absolute dramatic extreme of the AMUER range — darker than the deep smoked DS products, darker than any stained or pigmented product in the collection, and combining the darkness with a surface texture and geometric pattern that are both individually striking.

AM-20 Detail
Product Code
AM-20 (Herringbone)
Species
Top layer European Oak ;  Poplar core and backing layer
Construction
3-Layer Engineered Wood Flooring  — cross-ply solid timber core for dimensional stability
Total Thickness
14/3mm (14mm total, 3mm wear layer)
Top Layer
3mm solid European oak — supports 1–2 light sanding cycles
Stave Dimensions
90mm wide × 600mm long — standard herringbone stave proportion; the 1:6.67 width-to-length ratio produces the classic herringbone scale appropriate for room-sized installations from hallway to open-plan
Pattern
Herringbone — square-cut stave ends; alternating 90° zigzag; broken staggered joint creating the classic diagonal pattern; against the near-black saw mark surface, the herringbone geometry reads as a structural graphic pattern — the joint lines between staves are clearly visible as fine shadow lines across the dark, textured surface
Colour
AM-20 Near-Black Deep Slate — an intense near-black with subtle deep slate-green undertones that distinguish the colour from flat pure black; the colour treatment penetrates the oak surface rather than sitting as a pigment film on top; the AB grade's clean, consistent surface allows the near-black colour to read with maximum depth and uniformity across the assembled herringbone; the saw mark texture adds tonal micro-variation within the dark colour — raised saw mark ridges catch light and read marginally lighter, recessed valleys hold shadow and read deeper
Surface Treatment
Saw Mark — mechanically applied surface texture that replicates the fine, closely-spaced parallel ridge marks of traditional sash-saw or pit-saw milling, running perpendicular to the board's length across the full stave width; on AM-20's near-black colour treatment, the saw mark ridges and valleys interact with the dark colour to create fine horizontal light variation — preventing the extreme dark colour from reading as flat, and adding the historically-referenced hand-sawn texture that distinguishes AM-20 from a simply-painted or pigmented dark herringbone floor
Finish
UV Lacquer — hard, clear factory-applied finish; seals and protects the saw mark texture and near-black colour treatment; scratch and stain resistant; easy daily maintenance; no periodic re-oiling required; on AM-20's dark colour, the UV lacquer produces a controlled satin sheen that catches light along the saw mark ridges, adding further tonal variation and visual depth to the surface
Grading
AB — Select Grade: tight or absent knots; minimal open grain variation; very low sapwood content; clean, consistent board appearance; AB grade is the correct specification for AM-20's extreme dark colour treatment — on a near-black surface, CD or DEF grade knots, checks, and colour variation would be largely invisible, and the additional cost of higher character grades would provide no visible benefit; AB grade maximises colour consistency across the assembled dark herringbone
Edge Profile
Square Edge — flush stave-to-stave joint; against the near-black surface, the joint lines read as fine shadow lines that articulate the herringbone geometry with precise graphic clarity
Installation
T&G (Tongue-and-Groove) — glue-down (recommended) or nail-down (timber subfloor only); floating not recommended for herringbone T&G format
Underfloor Heating
Compatible — maximum surface temperature 27°C; maintain 45–60% RH year-round; flexible polyurethane adhesive for UFH; UV lacquer stable under heating cycles
Emission Class

PRODUCT OVERVIEW · AM-20 NEAR-BLACK SAW MARK HERRINGBONE

Three Compounding Elements — Dark Colour, Saw Mark Texture, Herringbone Pattern

AM-20 is built around three compounding design decisions that each push toward maximum drama, and which each enhance the effect of the others: an extreme near-black colour treatment, a saw mark surface texture with historical hand-sawn character, and the bold herringbone zigzag pattern.
The colour is the starting point and the most immediately striking element. AM-20's near-black deep slate-green is not the dark chocolate-brown of AMUER's deep smoked oak products (DS-01, DS-03) — it is significantly darker, occupying the absolute dark extreme of the oak colour spectrum. The subtle deep slate-green undertone that distinguishes AM-20's near-black from flat pure black prevents the floor from reading as monolithic or artificial, giving the colour an organic quality despite its extreme darkness.
The saw mark texture is the critical modifier. Without the saw mark, a near-black oak floor risks reading as flat, featureless, and industrial — more like a painted surface than a wood floor. The saw mark's fine, regular, cross-grain ridge pattern breaks the flat dark surface into micro-light variation: raised ridges catch available light and read marginally lighter; recessed valleys hold shadow and read deeper. This creates a surface with visible tonal movement that reads as genuinely material and three-dimensional even at maximum darkness. The historically-referenced saw mark texture also adds the artisan quality that prevents AM-20 from reading as simply dark or painted — it reads as a wood floor that has been intentionally darkened, not a painted floor that happens to have wood grain.
The herringbone pattern adds the geometric dimension: across the dark textured surface, the joint lines between staves read as fine shadow lines in a precise diagonal zigzag, creating a strong architectural structure within the dramatically dark floor. On a pale floor, herringbone is the floor's decorative interest; on AM-20's near-black surface, the herringbone becomes architectural — a structural graphic element that organises the dark floor and provides visual rhythm.
Design Guide
AM-20's near-black deep slate, saw mark texture, and herringbone geometry position it firmly at the dramatic, high-contrast, design-led end of the interior spectrum:
High-Contrast Dark Floor Design
AM-20 is the architectural dark floor for high-contrast interiors built on the principle that the floor is the design anchor — the darkest, most grounded material in the room that everything else is structured against. Bright white walls, pale marble surfaces, aged brass and copper, and statement furniture all read with maximum visual clarity against AM-20's near-black ground.
Design-Led Dark Maximalism
For maximalist and richly layered dark interiors — deep jewel-toned walls, layered textiles, antique gold, and curated decorative objects — AM-20's near-black herringbone provides the material ground that absorbs and anchors the richness above it. The saw mark texture and herringbone geometry add their own visual interest without competing with the layered interior above.
Boutique & Luxury Hospitality
For boutique hotel, members' club, and design-led restaurant interiors where a dark herringbone floor is the primary material statement, AM-20 delivers the combination of near-black colour depth, saw mark artisan texture, and UV lacquer commercial durability that the hospitality sector requires at this specification level.
T&G Installation — T&G Glue-Down Herringbone
T&G Glue-Down Installation
AM-20's near-black colour makes pattern misalignment more visible than on pale floors. Spine line accuracy is critical.

· Subfloor flatness: 3mm per 2m maximum
· Adhesive: flexible polyurethane or MS polymer; full-spread across stave back
· Layout lines: use white or bright-colour chalk lines on dark subfloor — standard chalk lines are invisible against a dark surface
· Spine line: establish with care; dry-lay 15–20 staves before committing to adhesive
· Near-black floor surface: wear clean knee pads and ensure no adhesive residue contacts the installed surface during laying — any residue is highly visible against the dark colour
· Expansion gap: 10mm minimum at all walls
· Acclimatise 48 hours before installation
· Adhesive cure: 48 hours before foot traffic
Underfloor Heating
AM-20 is compatible with both hydronic and electric UFH with T&G glue-down installation.

· Maximum surface temperature: 27°C
· Use flexible polyurethane adhesive compatible with UFH
· Switch off heating 48 hours before installation
· Restart: increase 1–2°C per day to target temperature
· Maintain 45–60% RH year-round
· UV lacquer is stable under UFH heating cycles
· Thermal resistance: 0.15 m²K/W maximum

Notes
High-Contrast Design-Led Living Rooms
Exceptional
AM-20 is the floor for living rooms where the floor itself is the primary design statement — a near-black herringbone that the interior is built around rather than a neutral ground that recedes. Pale walls, light furniture, and strong contrasting elements are essential; the dark floor anchors everything above it.
Entrance Halls
Exceptional
Dark near-black herringbone is a widely specified design choice for boutique hotel lobbies, private members clubs, and high-concept restaurant interiors where dramatic impact and material sophistication are the brief. AM-20's UV lacquer is durable for commercial foot traffic.
Master Bedrooms & Dressing Rooms
Excellent
A near-black herringbone creates an enveloping, dramatic bedroom or dressing room floor. Works powerfully with pale walls, marble or stone surfaces, and strong metallic fixtures.
Entrance Halls of Design-Led Properties
Excellent
AM-20's dramatic dark herringbone makes an immediate, powerful first impression appropriate for design-led properties where the entrance is intended to signal the interior character of the whole property.
Home Offices & Studies
Very Good
A near-black herringbone study or home office floor creates a focused, dramatic working environment — appropriate for interiors designed to signal seriousness and design ambition.
Rooms with Limited Natural Light
Consider carefully
AM-20's near-black colour will significantly reduce perceived lightness in rooms with limited natural or artificial light — the floor's texture detail and colour complexity are most visible in well-lit conditions. In very dark rooms, AM-20 may read as simply black rather than showing its texture and depth. Always view a sample in the actual room lighting before committing.
Bathrooms
Not Recommended
Not suitable for persistent moisture exposure.
Care & Maintenance — Near-Black Saw Mark Herringbone UV Lacquer Task Method
Task
Method
Daily
Dry sweep or vacuum with soft brush head every day without exception. AM-20's near-black colour shows dust, fine debris, pet hair, and light soil with maximum visibility — this is the defining maintenance reality of any very dark floor. Regular daily sweeping is not optional; it is the most important single maintenance action for AM-20's appearance. Sweep diagonally along the stave direction to move debris efficiently from the herringbone joints.
Weekly
Damp mop with well-wrung cloth and pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner. UV lacquer is fully sealed. No steam mop, no excessive water. Any water marks from insufficient wringing are highly visible on the dark surface — ensure the mop cloth is very well wrung before use.
Spills
Wipe immediately with a dry cloth. UV lacquer resists household liquids effectively. Any residue left on the dark surface is immediately visible; prompt, thorough wiping is essential.
Saw mark grooves
Vacuum with soft brush attachment across the saw mark direction periodically to clear fine debris from the texture ridges. The near-black colour makes debris in the saw mark grooves less obvious than on pale floors, but regular cleaning maintains the surface texture's visual clarity and prevents debris accumulation.
Scuff marks and footprints
A characteristic of very dark floors is that scuff marks, rubber marks, and footprints from rubber-soled shoes show very clearly. Use a barely damp cloth with pH-neutral cleaner for fresh marks; avoid abrasive cleaning on the dark surface.
Periodic maintenance
UV lacquer requires no periodic re-oiling. Buff with manufacturer-approved hardwood floor polish every 6–12 months. On near-black surfaces, use a polish formulated for dark wood floors to avoid any pale residue in the saw mark grooves or herringbone joints.
Scratches
Minor scratches: near-black matched UV lacquer repair pen — colour matching is critical on a very dark surface; obtain the correct product. Deep scratches: professional repair with near-black matched lacquer. Resanding a near-black colour-treated floor requires professional colour-matched refinishing — standard natural oak colour will be revealed below the treatment layer.
Never
Steam mop · standing water · bleach or acid cleaners · abrasive scrubbers · pale-coloured polish products that leave residue · silicone-based polishes · dragging furniture across the dark herringbone joints.

FAQ
Q1.   What is AM-20 black herringbone engineered flooring?
AM-20 is a 90×600mm herringbone engineered oak floor with AB select grade, saw mark surface texture, near-black deep slate colour treatment, and UV lacquer finish: 14/3mm 3-layer construction with a 3mm solid oak wear layer, T&G tongue-and-groove glue-down or nail-down installation. The near-black colour is achieved through a deep colour treatment applied to the AB select oak surface; the saw mark texture replicates historical hand-sawn mill marks running perpendicular to the board grain. The combination produces a dramatically dark, textured herringbone floor at the maximum dramatic end of the AMUER range.
Q2.  Why is AB grade used for AM-20's near-black colour treatment?
AB select grade is the correct specification for AM-20 because on a near-black colour treatment, the character features of higher grades (CD, DEF) — knots, checks, colour variation — are largely invisible at normal viewing distances. AB grade's clean, consistent surface allows the near-black colour to read with maximum depth and uniformity across the assembled herringbone, while the precise joint lines between staves read as graphic shadow lines rather than competing with colour variation. Using higher character grades for AM-20 would add cost without visible benefit.
Q3. How does AM-20 compare to AMUER's deep smoked oak products (DS-01, DS-03)?
AM-20 is darker than DS-01 and DS-03. The deep smoked products (DS-01, DS-03) produce an intense chocolate-brown through ammonia fuming — a chemically permanent colour with warm brown undertones. AM-20's near-black deep slate is a colour treatment that produces a significantly darker, cooler, more slate-inflected colour — closer to near-black than to chocolate-brown. Additionally, AM-20 is in herringbone format (90×600mm staves, T&G), while DS-01 and DS-03 are long plank format (150×1900mm, click). Specify DS-01/03 for the darkest available smoked warm-brown plank floor; specify AM-20 for the darkest available near-black herringbone.
Q4. How do you maintain a near-black herringbone floor?
The single most important maintenance requirement for AM-20 is daily dry sweeping — the near-black colour shows dust, fine debris, pet hair, and light soil with maximum visibility, more clearly than any other floor colour. Daily sweeping with a soft brush head (diagonally along the stave direction) is essential. Weekly damp mopping with a well-wrung cloth and pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner; no steam mop, no standing water. UV lacquer requires no re-oiling. Use dark-wood-formulated floor polish for periodic buffing to avoid any pale residue in the saw mark grooves.
Q5. Can AM-20 be sanded and refinished?
AM-20 has a 3mm solid oak wear layer supporting 1–2 light sanding cycles. However, the near-black colour treatment is a surface treatment concentrated near the board surface — resanding will reveal natural oak colour below the treatment layer. Refinishing AM-20 after sanding requires professional near-black colour-matched lacquer application or re-application of the colour treatment; standard natural oak UV lacquer recoating will not maintain the near-black appearance. Contact AMUER or a specialist flooring professional for refinishing guidance specific to AM-20.
Q6. Can AM-20 be installed over underfloor heating?
Yes — AM-20 is compatible with both hydronic and electric underfloor heating with T&G glue-down installation using flexible polyurethane adhesive. Maximum surface temperature 27°C. Maintain indoor humidity 45–60% RH year-round. Switch off heating 48 hours before installation; restart at 1–2°C per day. UV lacquer is stable under UFH heating cycles.
Q7. What is the minimum order for AM-20?
Standard MOQ is 200 m² per SKU from our China factory. Free samples available — email arboren@arboren.com. Samples dispatched within 4-5 business days. OEM orders from 200 m² MOQ.
